I just always wonder why we have these lengthy discussions about fighters signing with Haymon. Lets change the narrative and talk about why Ortiz is sticking with DLH when he clearly needs to be fighting on PBC where all his natural American fights are. Or why Benn his fighting under Hearn where Hearn clearly has his own self interest at heart instead of Benns. Benn needs to leave Hearn and get with Al to mix it up with the American WWs. Ortiz and Benn are not going to get any better fighting inferior opponents on DAZN.

The networks would get better fights which would bring more viewers; the promoters would be forced to make better fights to get the network $$.
So why not?
HBO did try to ask for better fights for their money. But there was immediate pushback from Bob Arum, who whined that they were trying to play matchmaker.

I think Ennis is the real deal but his career will suffer by not signing a lengthy contract with Haymon. He wont benefit signing with Bob so Haymon is his only route to stardom. I see the same issue with Benn and Ortiz. At 147 PBC is the only way to go after 147 to 154 and 160 the bigger fights are with Haymon unfortunately. Small promotional outfits dont help a fighter at the stage Ennis is at.Bronx2245 likes this.

I think the next change will come when either DAZN, ESPN or Showtime give up on boxing and then some new deals will get done.

You are right, without a major promoter his career will always be in cruise control and will never get the big fights. Regarding other fighters, Ben for instance believes he is ready for championship calibre now, yet feasts on has beens and never was’….now this is largely due to the rapacious desires of his promoter who wants to sell American subscriptions based on American fighters with names from a decade ago but that’s when junior needs to step in and say “you work for me, not vice versa.” That’s what the slave contract comments from Barry were about. Now Ennis, he is literally being frozen out. He would fight any of the champions right now he has just made the mistake of aligning himself with a minor league promoter who isn’t invested in by the networks. And regarding that promoter, he needs to be honest, the networks have always been in bed with certain promoters….the ones who can promote shows that put asses in seats and eyes on screens
As it stands, ennis will get a mandatory shot at spence sometime in the not to distant future. We know spence will probably duck that fight, but even if he doesn't, ennis doesn't need haymon to get him that fight. If he beats spence he is multi belt holder where anyone who wants to be a champion has to fight either ennis or crawford. At some point Ortiz is going to be ready for a big fight (probably a couple years from now), and haymon isn't needed to make that fight. Crawford still hasnt' signed and may never, so there is another fight that doesn't require haymon. Throw benn in there in a couple years.
Bottom line, the best options at 147 do not require haymon. In fact, signing with him probably means you don't get those fights.Last edited by jockpunk; 02-09-2022, 10:43 AM.Apollo7

"If I have to make a deal with Al, I will. I will sit down with [PBC house promoter] Tom Brown or Probellum, because I love [Probellum chief] Richard Schaefer to death because he was always so great to me back when I had all those guys, eight guys with Showtime."
Yeah, sit down with Al Haymon, and do it ASAP! Boots and Brandun need maximum exposure! Then go sit down with IBF! WTF??? Thy're searching the globe for someone to fight Hrgovic, but dragging their feet for Boots and Subriel Matias! IBF MAN UP!!!
