ATG fighters reached that status by fighting and beating the BEST in and around their natural weight classes, without cherry picking every opponent that suits your style. Obviously this strategy has done well for Canelo's bank account, and his delusional fanbase, and sadly even boxing writers that have likely forgotten more about boxing that I will ever know are jumping on the ATG bandwagon, by suggesting that if Canelo successfully beats that cruiserweight champ (his name escapes me at the moment), he will have eclipsed Pacquiao's career of winning titles at multiple weight classes. That's hilarious! While Canelo certainly has the best current resume in boxing, anyone that thinks that Canelo, his record and legacy are on par with Pacquiao's, truly doesn't know **** about boxing, and I will gladly debate with anyone who thinks otherwise. Please @ me...lol.
I agree with some of your points and disagree with others. I'm not even gonna begin to compare Canelo and Pacquiou as I'm not a massive fan of either. I understand his reasons for fighting Makabu as it adds a fifth weight class. He's trying to make history. He just became the first 4 belt undisputed from Mexico, and the first ever undisputed at 168. And I believe being a 5 weight champion will be a new record for a Mexican fighter also. So I get what he's doing and I don't disagree with his motivations. I too would rather see a fighter prove his status as a top fighter by being the king of a division and clearing it out, rather than winning a title then moving up. So I agree with you in that respect. But I disagree with some of your criticism of Canelo, as he's just become undisputed at 168 beating all the champions. So that ticks a box for me. He also won 3 out of 4 at 160, beating GGG and Jacobs. These were considered the 2 best he could face at that time in the division. So to be fair he has shown he has been the dominant fighter in and around those weight classes. I'd like to see him restart the process at 175. And if Benavidez truly wants Canelo. He should stop bustin his ass trying to make a weight he's clearly struggling with, and get in and win a title at 175 while Canelos dealing with Makabu, and then he'll have something to bring to the table and will get his fight.

You forgot to leave the part out where Makabu is a ***ing Cruiserweight Champion.

      Personally, I love the fight.

Does he not deserve to fight whoever he wants after just becoming undisputed?

The only one with anything to gain in a Benavidez fight is Benavidez, win or lose. He acts like canelo isnt going to make the same amount of money against Makabu as he would fighting one of us oe Benavidez. Lmao.

I’m a giant Benavidez fan but they dont realize the difference in their careers. Benavidez is still building a name while Canelo is building a legacy. Being a 5 weight champ is the goal, can’t hate.

Not many besides us on this website can name all the fighters Pac beat to be 8 weight champ, or Floyd or oscar, etc, but thats a legacy they leave behind, an incredible achievement, especially with these weight classes.

like another poster said, head Canelo off. Give him a REASON to fight you. You’re younger, be smart. You can’t make weight for a title fight? Move up. Canelo is not cutting much weight if he fights at CW, which means he can put on weight…which means he couldn land at Light Heavy with a Beterbiev who will be a year older. Get to Beterbiev, Bivol, Zurdo etc before Canelo or try to. Try to take what he doesnt have yet. If he still doesnt fight you when he leaves, you’re in a position to pickup what he left. Patience. Benavidez has the one thing over Canelo that almost no one else does and thats a big age gap in his favor.
Im not particularly a Canelo fan, but everything you say is spot on. It all makes perfect sense. But a lot of people just want to hate on him and its childish and pathetic. Maybe Canelo is getting close to upstaging or eclipsing one of their hero's.

If there was ever a legitimate reason for someone to not deserve the Canelotto it’s losing their belt on scales and/or drugs.

Boxing has become a damn joke now which is why I'm snuggling up to MMA more and more....just sick of the dumb boxing antics.
Every fighter except, maybe Usyk can get their resume demolished.

            anyway…

Good. Get the *** out of the sport then.

            Bye bye.

Canelo vs Makabu at 200 is a very good fight with the outcome in doubt. At 190 it’s just another b-side fighter being led to the slaughter

Would you have liked a fight between Malignaggi and Floyd when Malignaggi was a WW champion? Two WW champions fighting each other … great fight, no?
I’m speaking as a Canelo fan just FYI

And to think a little over 5 years ago, Canelo was a SWW and a MW who "needed time to grow into his body" to fight Golovkin. Now, he's ready to fight @ CW! Fancy that!

Alvarez invented a new kind of duck.
You want to avoid a risky opponent?
Move up or down in weight.
                    And then call it "historic".

He is the one who wanted to fight Plant to unify a weak super middleweight division, yet why didn't he try to unify the middleweight division? Is Andrade that much of a threat to the mighty Saul Alvarez? What about Bivol or Beterbiev at light heavyweight? He instead fought a clearly faded Kovalev. If paying good money to watch him beat no hopers is impressive to you, then good for you. But to suggest that he's an ATG at this point is seriously the funniest thing I have ever heard.
Call it strategic, call it unifying a weak division, the fact remains he did it. It is never easy to unify a division esp if you have to collect the belt one at at time. Those guys are champions and there is 4 chances to get it right for those guys while Canelo on the other hand has to be perfect all 4 times. I never called him an ATG but he is on his way based on his accomplishments, anything contrary is just hate. Not unifying middleweight is not a big a deal, he already beat the guy perceived as the best in that division in GGG. Had he not fought GGG, you may have a point. Let's wait till he campaigns at light heavyweight before we start talking about ducking Bivol 'cos if he does people will say he picked the weaker LHW, if he beats Beterbiev, they 'll say he is too old now so the goalpost will always keep moving. So if I give you the fact that Canelo may not be doing anything impressive, pls tell me what any of those guys at middleweight are doing besides sitting around waiting on a Canelo payday ala Caleb Plant. And while u hate that strategy, isn't it refreshing that Canelo disposed him of that belt he was sitting on fighting bums after bums.
