In a recent interview, Bob Arum brought up the fact that Eddie Hearn didn't bother to attend the WBC convention this year and wasn't there to lobby on behalf of Dillian Whyte when the purse split for Fury-Whyte was being debated.
For the last four years, Hearn's public statements about the WBC rules, how you become mandatory, the rights of a silver champion, the rights of an interim champion, how final eliminators work, etc have been so consistently wrong that I've always just assumed Hearn is a con artist trying to fool the public.
But Arum's interview made me think about the possibility that Hearn is just incompetent and doesn't understand sanctioning body rules and how they operate. How could he have bungled Whyte's situation over and over for so long and then not even have anyone at the WBC convention to plead Whyte's case?
Most major promoters have people on the payroll whose job it is to study sanctioning body rules for any quirks that can be used to their advantage. PBC's promoters have pulled off all sorts of successful rules maneuvers that have left Hearn confused and upset. Is Hearn just incompetent at this aspect of his job? When he claims WBC interim champions are entitled to 45% of a purse bid, is it possible he's really just not aware that hasn't been the rule in over a decade? When he claims that being silver champion makes you the mandatory, is it possible he's really just not aware that the silver title has never made you mandatory?
Serious question. Have I been giving Hearn too much credit the last few years and the truth is that he just has no idea what he's doing?
