Bernard Hopkins and Andre Ward also intentionally headbutted opponents but it was called "veteran tactics" when they did it.

Rubs his head in at about 18:52
That said I've watched the Jack vs Browne headclash several times and that one does look accidental.

But the bigger deal is that the ref/doctor allowed him to continue. Seems like we see a lot of (imo) premature stoppages these days. It was a relief that they didn't stop this.
After the headbutt, it appeared Beterbiev was holding his head in such a way to let the blood drip off his nose instead of going into his eyes. And I still think it was messing up his vision at times. When Browne was catching him and it looked like he just couldn't see the jabs at times.
Something else I noticed was that he didn't even paw at it once with his glove. He was just holding his head that way. Maybe he knew that wiping it away could get it in his eyes worse or mess up the path off his nose or something. Or maybe he was just too focused on destruction. I don't know but anyway, a lot of times, guys will keep wiping. He didn't.

They way he carried on 'business as usual' despite the massive cut shows from him a highly intelligent level of operational ability that fighters rarely possess. Age breeds wisdom.

People (low IQ idiots, Canelo fanatics and casuals) seem to think that Canelo will either take out Beterbiev with bodyshots or one punch KO him.
Ask yourselves this; how often does Beterbiev get hit to the body? Look at his stance and crouch. His lead leg is extended forward (maximum aggression pushing forwards) which means he gives up very little space to the body. A shorter guy like Canelo would struggle unless they're in very close and a taller guy would have to give up his stance just to attack to the body.
It's very calculated but people just dismiss him as a puncher and a brute whereas he is anything but.
Also, rewatch the Browne fight, Beterbiev very rarely got hit flush even through he was bleeding like an animal at a slaughterhouse.
Canelo's only chance is in the centre of the ring and countering Beterbiev, otherwise he gets pushed back to the ropes, turned, grappled and clubbed into submission while losing his punching leverage on the backfoot.Last edited by CasperUK; 12-23-2021, 02:25 PM.

I don't know if guys practice that. I suppose if they do, they would have a high rate of being effective at it. But if it's just a plan B, then maybe it doesn't always work the way they want it to.Boxing Goat likes this.
