I agree with your assessments and I recall the backstory ESPN did on the family turmoil prior to the Nakatani fight. He is very mercurial and probably bipolar although I'm no doctor so I won't make an armchair diagnosis.

However, my guess is that he's probably had familial issues at other times in his career (going by he and his father's behavior) that didn't impact his prior ring performances. What impacted his performance most was an opponent who was dealing with a laundry list of issues himself but remained focused and executed his gameplan near flawlessly.
