Porter is solid but I knew hed be Buds big win. I think if he didnt retire he couldve gotten a belt at 154, there have been lesser champs there before but hed never be lineal or undisputed.
Porter is most certainly not overrated. I'd rate him as A-/B+ type fighter. He's fought all the top fighters and fought almost all of them close and was only stopped once. He has no bad losses on his record. Because he was willing to take on so many top opponents, it allows us to use him as a litmus test. The irony is that if these other guys were more willing to fight each other we wouldn't need to guage everyone based on how they performed against Porter.
Alot of fans seem to see only in extremes, either someone is elite or they are a "bum" when in fact it's much more nuanced than that. When good fighters are willing to face other good fighters, the result is one of those good fighters will probably catch an L.

But he lost every big fight and argubally lost to Ugas and Danny. How in the hell can you call him a A- fighter?
Hell no! He has only been overmatched just one time in his career and that was against Terence 'Bud' Crawford. Which goes to show just how good Terence Crawford really is which is why he is considered among many as the best P4P fighter in the world today.
I think Ugas and Brook had better performances overall

For the record, I grade in relation to his peers and I graded him A-/B+. His loss to Thurman was razor close and could have gone his way and his loss to Spence was also a close fight. He was stopped by Crawford (in a fight many felt he was competitive in until the end) and he lost to a Kell Brook before he was ruined by GGG. In addition he has wins over Danny Garcia, Devin Alexander, Paulie Malignaggi and Adrien Broner when they were still relevant.

A quick review of Boxrec shows there are over 1700 fighters ranked at Welterweight, and we'd assign those fighters grades anyplace from A-F. Out of those 1700, how many do you think should be ranked above Porter? Half a dozen?
