Canelo fans when they hear Tyson backs Canelo over Plant - “That’s right! Mike is a legend and knows what he’s talking about. “

Canelo fans when they hear Ward backs Plant - “I hate Ward, he obviously has a personal vendetta against Canelo. He’s a nut puncher and probably racist”.

I'm always pulling for a fellow American. But this fight really looks like a second version of Canelo vs. Khan. Canelo is incredibly hard to hit clean, and even when a heavy puncher like GGG catches him with a good shot, Canelo has a chin like an engine block. Plant may shoot-n-scoot for round after round, but he's never going to hurt Canelo. Eventually, Canelo will figure him out, predict where his head and liver are going to be after throwing a punch, and he will put poor Mr. Plant down for the count. Props to Plant for taking this on, but I don't expect him to have much of a chance here.

All three guys Plant mentioned were all arguably stronger than Mike when they fought. Mikes strength came from swiftness and speed. Plant just sounds offended in his reply. Canelo has what Plant has in terms of skill, so it’s not like Canelo is some one dimensional “strong” punching dumb dumb.

Canelo figured out a way to get to Lara whom i thought going into that fight was going to teach canelo a boxing lesson. Apart from Floyd, Lara was the most slickest boxer Canelo has fought yet he figured out a way to get through to Lara enough to get the W from the judges.... that was over 7 years ago, plant aint no Lara, and Canelo aint that same Canelo from 2014. Canelo will get to work from round 3 onwards and systematically break Plant down bit by bit for late stoppage, think Canelo will put that bit of extra venum into his attacks to try and get Plant out of there due to the insults.

It's not a good look. Take Canelo's balls out your mouth Mike!

Canelo has fought fighters of a similar size to plant recently, Smith and Kovalev. Smith went the distance although was clearly only there to survive. Kovalev got stopped late but was coming off the back of a very hard fight against Yarde, a short training camp and was well past his prime. Point being that Canelo both time was taken int ok the tail end of the fight and couldn’t make his power count early against guys with a significant height and reach advantage, both of whom were arguably inferior boxers to plant at this point of his career. People forget just how big plant is for 168.

                  Canelo 5’ 8”, 70.5” reach
                  Saunders 5’ 10”, 71” reach
                  Plant 6’ 1”, 74” reach

Way bigger than both Canelo and Saunders. That’s going to make it a lot easier for him to stay on the outside and going to make Canelo work a lot harder to catch him. He struggled to close distance on Kovalev who was winning the fight when he stopped him. People are looking at the Saunders fight and just assume plant will go the same way. I don’t think that’s a given. Plant seems to be coming to win, lives the life unlike Saunders and is significantly bigger. Reasonable to expect Plant gives Canelo a much better run for his money. I give him perhaps a 40/60 chance of the upset.

Good analysis. We cannot forget though that judges are not perfect and I would imagine the tendency would be for them to give Canelo rounds that are close. His punches have the appearance of being harder and more effective and it certainly seems to impact the cards. For example, if you watch some of the rounds (not suggesting anything here more than just this) with GGG where Canelo was given a round and you really dissect it, GGG won the round but Canelo simply looked more impactful in the round. Strange concept but possible.

Plant is a decent skillful fighter, but he’s no match for Canelo. Mike gave a detailed answer to what Canelo’s winning strategy entails, he wasn’t disrespectful, even though one can summarize he doesn’t care all that much for Mayweathers style or Mayweather.

Iron Mike smoking that stuff again. To be fair, he never liked the superb slickness of Mayweather, and anyone who boxes remotely like him.

I appreciate both the relentless type offence that Tyson had, and the sweet smooth skills of a Pernell Whitaker and Floyd, although Mayweather could fight aggressively too.

In terms of long term health and which way is better to box, the hit and not get hit much style is the way to go.
