So perhaps if Rolly is cuban and the guy asking is also CUBAN, thats a rooting interest, isnt it? Boxing is a tribal sport and people like to root for their own. BUT u gotta be careful so u dont start talking down on other races or peoples instead of rooting for your own!
Best post so far. I’m Cuban, and I naturally tend to root for Cubans in their fights. I think it’s perfectly fine to root for the person you most identify with, whether it be by nationality, race, religion — whatever. The problem becomes when people start to buy too much into the superiority of their own. That’s a slippery slope. And, sadly, it’s an almost inevitable byproduct of combat sports.

To answer the OP’s question: Romero is of Cuban descent. But he’s racially mixed. Someone said his mom is half-black and his dad is white. But that doesn’t tell the whole story when it comes to most Caribbean Latinos. The admixture of races in us is off the chain. If you look at me, you might think I’m white — or not. I carry about 75% European DNA, mostly from Spain and Portugal. But I’m 13% indigenous Cuban, 1% Mexican and 1% Central American native. The rest is mostly African. I’ve been mistaken for everything, most often Puerto Rican and Italian (usually Sicilian). Anyway, I’ll wager anything that Rolly is far more mixed than simply “mulatto.”

If you are 75% Spanish then you are white. Just deal with it.

I always thought ethnicity adds flavor to a fighter’s story, but as many pointed out, it shouldn’t overshadow their skills in the ring. By the way, this reminds me of how Minecraft communities bring together people from all backgrounds too; diversity makes things richer. If anyone’s into open-world building and global player bases, check out Minecraft APK — it shows how gamers worldwide unite over creative freedom, just like fans worldwide unite over boxing regardless of origin.

I honestly thought he had some Dominican in him, but at the end of the day, who cares? lol. Learning he's Cuban makes no difference in watching him fight. It's about the character. I previously didn't like him. I thought he was just a ****y ahole and had that cartoon mean mug face. Though seeing him he's come back from some KO losses and beat a star in Ryan by just sticking to a gameplan made me a fan. His post fight interviews showed either he's matured up a bit or just went through a change in life and doesn't take things so serious. He's actually funny in his more recent interviews and dare I say likeable.

I can't fking believe some fans here, and tank part white! Rolly is what we call "mulato" in Cuba, his background is Judo I'm sure he is a black belt, like his father and he got into boxing because of the money, which in my opinion regardless of anyone opinion, he reached his goal and keep going, which is money, all the trash talk is part of what help him make some $$$. But the "fans" wants to know where he came from, ethnicity wise, not if he was poor, or his parents jumped on a raft or any other things that are more important than his color which he had no choice.
