Amazon Prime, YouTube, Apple+... they all do subscriptions with a one off purchase for big/new releases. This isn't new. You might pay because it's something that simply isn't included in your subscription.

Last weekend I bought the Wilder v Fury fight on Kayo Main Event. That's a PPV add on for a sports TV subscription in Australia. I never expected that fight in my subscription.

It's a case of watching which fights go to PPV. If it's the rare massive fights and dual network fights then fair enough. If they're putting Whyte v Wallin on PPV then I'd reassess whether my subscription was worth it to just watch lower level fights. That said, Whyte v Wallin would have been a PPV before DAZN, so I'm still winning.
    Indeed,

I don’t mind it as such, If a fight is really worth the money, I’ll pay

The problem for DAZN is if they hadn’t made a big song and dance about no PPV’s, there wouldn’t be the same negativity, even if their reason for now deciding they might do them is somewhat understandable.

And also, If they have backtracked on doing PPV’s, there’s no saying they won’t keep doing so and end up putting the likes of Whyte v Wallin on PPV.

After all, this is the company that quickly doubled the subscription price in the USA once they made big signings. Now going down the PPV route after saying they won’t. So I’d say there’s a high chance they will start making PPV’s with lesser fights eventually.

I actually really like DAZN and think it’s been good value so far...but I can see them heading down a route where it starts losing value and they make you pay for extra for fights they shouldn’t.

They were champions period. Save me this "paper champion" crap.

Well, their PPVs sure sold more than a few PPVs, eh? But I thought it was not about PPV buys? Why does spectacular event matter now?

It looks like Pay per view is here to stay. Even DAZN is venturing into that old business model. i guess their online subscriptions weren't as strong as they expected.

Fans are basically just paying for the the main card.

90% of the budget go to the two fighters. (They're risking their lives brah.) As if the rest of the cards don't, which get paid crap, or probably less than 5% of the main fighters. Which is why MMA fans get their money's worth.

If Canelo-Plant can follow it up, maybe I'll have converted some folks

Just outside of Hartford, CT brother! If you're in the area would totally be down!
Well I'm in California at the moment but not forever, I'll keep in touch as a move to the east coast is possible.

I find that with any sport, first time viewers need to understand what they are looking at before they can appreciate it and thus get excited about it. I remember back when I first started really paying attention to boxing, it's when I realized they aren't just swinging for the fences, and once I started to see the chess match that I got obsessed with it.

Even if boxing was free you'd never get those kind of viewer numbers.

PPV acknowledges that but has the effect of further limiting the number of viewers. That's why we start to get worse and worse fights on PPV. PPV is making it less visible and less popular. So a smaller number of people need to pay more and more to make the fights financially viable.

Subscription seems to be a halfway house approach. Make it more accessible at a lower price point but acknowledge that it will never be a major event like the World Cup.

The jury is out whether boxing can generate enough viewers at a lower price point.
That also makes you think - if they can’t generate the £££ off they believe a fight is worth from standard advertising, or a dedicated boxing subscription (like DAZN in the UK) or increasingly already steep PPV prices - maybe it’s the promoters and fighters overvaluing themselves?

Boxing is broken in so many ways.

Joshua Usyk was worth buying on dead zone at $20. That's a reasonable cost. I'm not paying more than a movie for a fight that's usually less entertaining.

                      1) Bad undercards
                      2) Good fights , that should be on network TV getting elevated to PPV status
