Lol. Sometimes being "great" at something can be a handicap. Let me tell you a story lol... I was in Toronto and found through a friend, an incredible teacher in the style of martial arts I was training in... So I go to the guy and he is very nice. He tells me to train a bit and he will give me some feedback. The appointed time comes and I am expecting for him to diminish me a bit (par for the course) as most teachers seem to do some variation of this when you go there with an open heart & mind. I never did this BTW lol...but I digress.

I am suprised and flattered! He basically tells me I am excellent and that he can offer me one of three possibilites: a) He can let me be me, train in the class, maybe teach a class, or so....2) He can offer some critique, Maybe give me some tips here and there..3) or he can treat me as a student... give me the works! take my body break all these habits down and rebuild it correctly, with nooooo snivelling!

Well me being me, and seeing how good this guy was I went for it... Btw, it was excrutiating, but I got incredibly good because of his efforts I will forever be in his debt....

The point is that precisely because I was so good, I had developed certain habits and tendencies that had to be deconstructed and properly constructed to really make progress. And damn if Edward was not absolutely right!!!

I agree with you about the Cubans and see it the same way as my own experience... They are fcking brilliant fighters who have gamed the Ammy style. To get better they need to deconstruct certain things they do, that are bad habits for a professional fighter. Like fighting at a preferred distance, and basing so much on counter punching, etc.

I love the Cubans but alas I agree....

And that is why the age is so important with Cubans. Casamayor defected late, just like Hurtado, but they got rid of most of the amateur habits. Lara is a Dog, but only we he find a dancing partner. I think most of them adjust pretty well. Gonzalez, Barrera and Dorticos, they don't play around. Before that,, JC Gomez and YP Romero got down and dirty, just like Mike Perez, unfortunately he wasn't the same after his tragic fight against Abdullah. The new batch, they all defected young. You going to see a big difference with the younger guys. Fans tend to forget how hard is for Cubans to turn pro. Be safe.

The problem with Cuban boxers is they spend too much time boxing in the amateur ranks. By the time they turn pro, they're pretty much burned out.

Is it any wonder that Cuba still hasn't produced any hall of fame fighters besides Kid Gavilan, Mantequilla Napoles, Sugar Ramos and Luis Rodriguez?

You missed Kid Chocolate. Remember, after Castro the whole professional game was closed. The few that escaped had great careers, like Legra, Nino Valdes, Kid Paret and the ones you mentioned. It is hard to leave your country and family behind, not knowing what could happens to them, or if you ever going to see them again. Those decisions are hard, an 18 years old Kid wouldn't make that or think about jumping the fence. That's why they got here late. Things are changing, kids like Scull, Morell Jr., Yoelvis Gomez Ariel Perez and a few more, are all under 23-24 years old. And they are doing pretty good.

Lara is a beast now cause he's old. You guys are giving him too much credit. Dude is boring af and got a draw against Williams and a gift draw against molina. Wasting his time fighting carnelos brother and Yuri foreman.
