Pac's injury required surgery performed by one of the most respected surgeons in the world, Dr. Neal El Attrache, the President of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) who verified the severity of the injury. He is the same surgeon who has operated on Kobe Bryant(for a similar injury) and Tom Brady.
“We have an MRI scan that confirms he has a rotator cuff tear. He has a significant tear,” Dr. Neal ElAttrache told ESPN after the fight. ElAttrache said the injury will sideline the 36-year-old eight-division world champion for between nine and 12 months.
The initial rotator cuff injury(strain) during training camp also forced Pac to stop training for more than 2 weeks which interrupted his preparation for the fight against Mayweather. It became a full blown tear during the actual fight though which affected his performance.
Pac was well within his rights to call for a rematch because of that injury but Floyd never gave it to him. In retrospect Pac should have withdrawn from his fight with Floyd because of the handicap the initial training camp injury caused him.
