Because it is a sense of exclusivity. I don't see Spence ever saying in a Canelo-Plant fight, "I hope Plant wins because he's an American fellow." I doubt that sense of fellowship ever existed between blacks and whites in the United States. Some white people just don't get it. I hope Davis and Bud start talking like that soon as well.
