I agree with much of the sentiment on this thread - Canelo has challenged himself and has taken some high risk low reward fights, but there's the missing ingredient that hasn't been mentioned - he's Mexican and a decent looking guy. What may have passed some folk by is that the WBC and Vegas are constantly on the lookout for their next superstar - their next ODLH - and any upcoming prospect who looks promising is granted extra opportunities, maneuvered into title shots and so on. Prior to Canelo they had hopes for Chavez Jr, but he turned out to be a dud... Vicious Vic ditto, Zurdo... same same... in Canelo they found the right combination of heritage, skills, looks and desire and they made sure he had the opportunities to shine on the big stage.
That is not to detract from Canelo in any way - he needed the ability and the self confidence to take the opportunities he was given and also the desire and willingness to grow from the wealth of top level experience. He was being groomed to be a star almost out of his teens and he is to be credited because he could have taken a much easier path and still have been made the face of boxing but the fact remains that vansihingly few fighters get the level of opportunity to shine from a young age that Canelo did.
