I made a post about this on here earlier. In Finland we got gypsies a.k.a Romani people who are darkskinned and dark haired, not white red haired irish looking dons. (Nothing wrong with being irish or redheaded)
Same thing in Bulgaria, Hungary and other places in Europe.
I believe they are just IRISH people who live the traveler lifestyle.Comment

Irish travellers are called gypsies in a derogatory fashion, Romany too to a degree. Irish ones are well known for bare knuckle fights, being tough men with hard lives and all the source of the wilder stories you hear regarding fighting gypsies in my experience. I think the biggest difference is that the Romani have been travelling throughout Europe and the world for like 800 years while Irish travellers do not really travel beyond the isles, often set up permanent camps and have not been around nearly as long more like 400ish years as the previous poster mentioned (cromwellian conquest). The funny thing is that to most of the world, they are the same with many like you not knowing only most do not ask the question. This allows people like BJS to basically "use" whatever parts of each travelling culture that he wants.
Modern gypsies here in Northern Ireland at least like people have said, pretty much earn their bad rep. And its nothing to do with being poor as another had mentioned it may be. As an example, they were all given council housing here and they literally just stripped down the houses of copper/lead etc and sold it all and went back to the camp. When we were young I wasn't allowed to answer the door to the gypsies that would call offering garden work or selling rugs as it was largely a cover for them to scope places to burgle/rob.Comment

BJS's people have been in the UK for centuries and probably spent centuries more wandering around mainland Europe before arriving here, intermingling with the locals as they went, so the original bloodline of whatever tribe they belonged to back in India has been heavily diluted. You can't tell a UK Romani gypsy from a "regular" white Brit, or an Irish traveller, without analysing their DNA.Comment

Why is it that there are many Romanis (not all) from the Balkans still have very Indian appearance?
