See, this is what's at the back of my mind. How is this not precisely the kind of thing ironed out in contracts beforehand? I'll put it this way, as of right now I'm not concerned that this won't actually happen and I'm leaning to weird theatrics regardless of what anyone says on record

Apparently, the contract said 20 and someone else said the ring in training was 18 that was to be used for fight night.

Also, note you can have a 20 ring and make it 18 with ropes. Apparently, Canelo vs Smith was 20.

Also apparently they were going for a spongy surface (see Fury vs Klitschko) and presumably tighten the ropes ;-)
