I know you're innocent until proven guilty but him not wanting to speak without his attorney present already makes him suspect.

The bolded is what anyone with commonsense would do. Police are not above reproach , if they focus in on someone and think that person did it did it they will a lot of times drop all other leads. Have seen enough cases of coerced and false confessions, I have zero criminal record but would never be interviewed by police w/o a lawyer present. With that being said I lean towards Verdejo having had something to do with her disappearance.
