Comments Thread For: De La Hoya: If Ortiz Passes Test With Hooker, I Wouldn't Mind Him Fighting Crawford

If Vergil Ortiz Jr. performs the way Oscar De La Hoya expects Saturday night, Ortiz's promoter would be willing to put him in a much more difficult fight later this year. De La Hoya stated during an appearance Thursday on "The Ak & Barak Show" that he'd be comfortable making an Ortiz-Terence Crawford welterweight title fight if Ortiz is impressive in his bout with Maurice Hooker. The heavy-handed Ortiz (16-0, 16 KOs), of Grand Prairie, Texas, and Hooker (27-1-3, 18 KOs), a former WBO junior welterweight champ from Dallas, will headline DAZN's stream Saturday night from ****ies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas (9 p.m. ET).

I like Ortiz, but Crawford would dominate him. It would be a case of too much too soon. Ortiz still has plenty of holes in his game, what is the rush?

"I wouldn't mind..." is a weak endorsement from Oscar. I doubt it happens. The question is "What's Plan B?" Oscar works with Arum frequently, but not so when it comes to Haymon. I know one thing, Spence Jr. vs. Ortiz Jr. would be a bigger event in the Dallas area! I think Jerry Jones would be all in too!

I'm still waiting on Boots to get his breakout fight. Lipinets just isnt that guy to get him the recognition he deserves

All the promoters are flawed but of GBP, PBC, Arum, Hearn I feel like GBP are least likely to take a 'roll the dice' big risk fight for one of their young talents. Ortiz might have to rock the boat a little to push Oscar to make the fight

This is not the time to cash out and ruin Ortiz just yet Oscar. He has his entire future ahead of him. Give him more time to develop. He has only sixteen professional prizefights under his belt. If you rush him in there too soon he just may end up like Fernando Vargas.

The kid only has 16 professional fights, Oscar needs to wait until he has 22 or 23 solid victories under his belt before even considering putting him in with the top dawgs, the only fight that really makes sense for him is Boots Ennis to see who is the best out of the young crop.. Like when Floyd fought Corrales when they were both 24 25

And Terence "wobbled by Gamboa and Kavaliauskas" Crawford doesn't?

I think that fight goes much more competitive than you're giving credit.

Only way to find out is by testing him. A good fight for him would be Thurman but is the annoying pbc.

Don’t Fernando Vargas this kid. It was one thing to put canelo in with mayweather because while mayweather embarrassed and school canelo, he didn’t inflict serious physical damage. Crawford is a different kind of animal. Hes meaner and comes to hurt his opponents.
