Judges will usually score power punches a little higher than jabs.
By your figures, Pernell landed 232 - 160 = 72 power punches to DLH's
191 - 45 = 146.
So Pea landed about 20% more total punches, but Oscar landed more than double the power punches. Depends on your preference. If you, like you say, think a jab equals a left hook, then Pea won the fight. Most think otherwise.
I'm not saying a jab equals a left hook outright,
I'm saying the effectiveness of the punch is what matters most. Doesn't look like the left hook was all that effective in this particular case as Pea was able to pepper DLH with the jab quite often.
The jab combined with Peas defensive abilities, made Oscar look silly plenty of times.
4/12/97 W 12 PERNELL WHITAKER (counter-puncher’s delight, as they both threw less than 50 punches per round. Oscar landed 191 of 557 (34%) to 232 of 582 (40%) for Whitaker, who had 160-45 edge in jab connects. Oscar down for flash in 9th. Pete lost point in 3rd for low blow. Scoring: 115-111 D; 116-110 D; 116-110 D.)
"Pernell "Sweet Pea" Whitaker's eight-year reign as boxing champion ended tonight at the hands of Oscar De La Hoya and those who officially judged the fight.
De La Hoya (24-0) claimed his fourth world title at the age of 24 by taking Whitaker's long-held World Boxing Council welterweight belt in a unanimous decision at the Thomas & Mack Center. Although many saw the bout as even, two judges had De La Hoya winning the fight comfortably by 116-110, and the other had it 115-111.
Whitaker scored the only knockdown of the fight, in the ninth round; he connected on 232 punches to De La Hoya's 191, according to CompuBox Inc.; and he landed 160 jabs to 45 for the challenger. "
thats wrong. I dont remember getting Whitaker losing a point for a low blow. I think De La Hoya got cut in the fight, and one of the alphabet belts' rules stated that in the case of an accidental headbutt, a point should be taken away from the non-headbutted fighter to 'even out' the effects of the cut.
...Im pretty sure thats what happened, but I may be wrong.
and compubox numbers are not only very misleading, but often pretty off. Dont use them to justify your scorecard. that goes for everyone.
anyways again, I had it a draw.
and a left hook isnt magically>a jab. when are you people going to learn that a clean jab does more damage than a grazing 'hayemaker'? geez...
WOW! A pacq fan stating it like it really is! This is what keeps me posting on this forum. The hope of constructive and objective debating! Cheers to KOBOY!
Appreciate it! There is a difference between a Manny Pacquiao fan and a pachugger. Although I am a big Pac fan, I am also a JMM fan, a frustrated PBF fan, a big Mosley fan, a Cotto fan, a Jorge Linares fan, a Saul Alvarez fan. In short, I am a boxing fan.

But yet you Ricans make a big deal out Tito beating him after.
And I'd be willing to bet dollars to freaking tamales you think JCC vs. Pea was a draw. As far as DLH vs. Pea, it is one of those fights you can watch a million times, and depending on your mindset, either could have won. Or had had it as a draw. Which is pretty much how I had it.

Ok You cokehead fanatic........I've said it numerous times.......Whitaker got ROBBED. Chavez is my 2nd favorite atg boxer, but he lost that one. In fact I was drunk and still scored it for Whitaker. That's how bad he lost.
