I know gyros are Greek, but that's the only difference I'm aware of, other than taste of course. I ain't up on the details of the preparation. Where exactly do shawarmas originate from?

"Shawarma is a Middle Eastern Arabic-style sandwich-like wrap usually composed of shaved lamb, goat, chicken, turkey, beef, or a halal mixture of meats."

                  gyros are greek.

shawarma is from the middle east.

i don't know what gyro or shawarma means though.

to us it's a sandwich but i know it's a plate dish as well.

They are similar, it is the toppings, and the distinct sauces that sets them apart. Shawarmas are better though, since they have better sauces, like something called humus, its made out of ground sesame seed and other ingredients, and garlic sauce.
