A Good Sign Of Boxing's Declining Popularity

I was in Las Vegas this past weekend and I was astounded that you could not place a bet on Bradley-Campbell or Witter-Alexander.

I went to every big sportsbook on the strip: Mandalay, MGM, Caesars, Bellagio, Wynn, Harrahs, The Mirage. Nobody had it listed and even more importantly they weren't interested in even looking into it to post a line.

At the same time I could place a bet on 10 different fights that are going to be on UFC101 in a weeks time.

I find it incredibly amusing when people start saying 'boxing is dying' or 'boxing is in decline'. Then then whip out some spurious comparison with UFC....

Ok, for a start boxing is a sport. UFC is an organization and a company. It would make more sense to compare Golden Boy or Top Rank or the WBO to UFC; it makes no sense comparing boxing to UFC.

Secondly, boxing is absolutely engrained in the heritage of so many countries it is not about to go away. It's such a part of mainstream culture that it's not something that can be removed. People everyday make passing and casual references to boxing terminology and well as the fact EVERYONE knows what boxing is. How many people know what MMA or The UFC is?

Thirdly, you are implicitly speaking just for the USA. Boxing is booming in Europe (Germany and the UK especially) as well as the fact Mexico (population ~110M) will never let boxing die. They don't even want to know about MMA. Let alone Asia where Pacquaio has taken boxing's popularity to new heights.

        .

Did you even read what I posted?

I hate UFC and am a boxing fan but if you can't bet on World Championship Boxing matches in Las Vegas that is a serious problem for the sport.

I'll tell you how many people know what MMA is. Alot more than boxing pretty much everywhere I go.

Boxing isn't the worldwide attraction you are making it out to be. When was the last time Pac fought in the Phillipines? He fights in the USA every single time. How much money are dirt poor Pinoys contributing to the infrastructure of the sport? None.

Boxing in Germany will wither away when the Klitschkos are done as well, there isn't a single decent German fighter and the fans will tire of non stop imports passed off as Krauts at some point.

Oh, and boxing booming in the UK is funny. Really helps to explain why all their TV networks are giving up on it.

Boxing went through a mini boom in the UK when it came back to free TV but now that ITV have big money problems they are giving it up. If top class boxing was back on the BBC and ITV viweing figures would be excellent hell even Harrisson vs Williams got 8million viewers on ITV.

What is more amusing is that you completely ignore the fact that Las Vegas is the center of the boxing world and nobody from anywhere in the world will argue with the fact.

A big part of why sports are wildly popular is because people like to gamble on them. Especially boxing, which is the only sport where the commentators talk openly about the odds and wagering.

When you cannot gamble on boxing in the center of the boxing world it is a serious indictment of the popularity of the sport.

Obviously you don't want to discuss it, you just want to come in here and defend boxing with some bull**** vocab that isn't even relevant or related to what I posted.

              NO IT ISN'T.

One of our biggest stars in Amir Khan had his first world title fight a few weeks ago, only a few people knew it was happening, and the MEN Arena only sold a dismal 5,000 tickets, not even close to a sell out.

Boxing has declined, people just have to accept it.

Maybe they aren't the best. Thanks for missing the point completely.

Now I realize why I don't start a thread in here more often.
