My Problem With The SMW Tourney...

While I think the tourney in concept is wonderful for the sport of boxing and is exactly what the doctor ordered as the multiple sanctioning bodies and weight classes are killing the sport.

BUT

the round robin format that will potentially take 2 years is a bad format and could possibly lose peoples excitement and interest. It won't lose our interest because we are the diehard fans but the goal should be to captivate the fringe fans, and i think 2 years could lose them.

I would like to see them add 2 fighters and go single elimination. A quadruple header on the first night. Then, 2 months later, the semis followed by the finals in 2 months. The whole tourney would be done in 6 months and they would never lose the excitement.

I also have a huge problem with Jermain Taylor being in this tourney. He just lost to Froch.

JT wouldn't be in the tournament if there was any other decent American SMWs. But seeing as they couldn't possibly have more European fighters than American, they put him in.

The winner of this tournament can still not say he's the best in the division. There are some good fighters out there like Karoly Balzsay, Bute, Andrade and the most underrated SMW in the world SAKIO BIKA.

Theres nothing wrong with the format it's perfect. This going to take time but we are going to see the best possible matchups that could be made in this division. These guys are fighting the very top of their divisions they need time to recoperate and properly train for their next opponents. Two month as you suggested it's not even close to being enough time for these boxers to prepare. Like I said the format is perfect they shouldn't change a thing.

2 months maybe a little short but 10-12 weeks is more than enough time. A typical training camp is 8 weeks for a fight. Most fighters would like to fight more often than they do anyway, lack of dates and big money keep them less active. The fringe fan will not be interested for 2 years. You can count on that. Boxing needs the fringe or casual fan to come on board in order to grow the sport.
