exactly.
and calzaghe didn't have draws and NC in his defense streak like bhop did.
people give joe **** for not unifying but they conveniently forget that hopkins didn't try to unify his first 7 years as a champ.
if king didn't organize the tournament for tito , who knows when hopkins would have tried to unify.Comment

Looking at another great fighter, who is much overlooked, that has a similar career. No one would ever think of calling him a top ten P4P great. An ATG certainly, but top ten? Well maybe some would if he was American.....and black.
Just joking.
He was also a long time champion at his natural weight class with a record 22 defenses and also unified his division. He also moved up and won a second title at a higher weight class. During his long title reign he beat a number of chumps but also beat as many champions as Hopkins at thirteen or whatever it was. Some of those champions, long time champs and also some that unified themselves and beat many great champions.
The difference is he was a small guy that didn't, and still doesn't get any recognition. Being in the smaller weight class, he never had that huge fight with a superstar because of the smaller divisions lacking the pulling power of heavyweights etc in those days.
The other big difference is that he did this all undefeated. A very similar career, but he never lost his title and retired as the reigning undefeated champion. All the fighters he beat were also either bigger or the same size as him. He never fought anyone champion apart from those who were champions in his division or above.Last edited by BennyST; 07-13-2009, 09:35 AM.Comment

joppy and holmes both kept their belts for about 5 years 'til the middleweight tournament in 2001.
shows how easy it is to keep a belt at 160 in hopkins era......Comment
