not enitrely true, calzaghe dominsted the division for over 10 years and made 20 odd defence, held every belt at one point and established himself with wins over the old (eubank) and new (kessler).

this tourney seems to have got some people into overdrive, yes its a good thing that the tournament is being made but in all honesty only kessler, AA and possibly bute are worthy of mention in the same sentence as calzaghe.

dirrell and ward are too green, froch is a KO loss waiting to happen, JT seems spent, andrade is exciting but any top fighter would UD him, outside the tournament there is bute but even then he has his stamina problems and could end up like JT.

now if i was to take some of the lesser competition that zaghe faced (prime robin reid, brewer, mitchell, lacy, sheika) i think they would all give the second group of fighters i mentioned a good fight. especially reid who was a very good champ in his heyday.

seriously man calzaghes resume is often underrated.

Kessler will never surpass Calzaghe's record simply because he lost what would be the defining fight in both their careers. With both at their prime, they fought and JC won. End of.

Prime Calzaghe would have won this tourney without breaking sweat. If he was ever going to lose, it would have been to B-Hop (or Dawson) at LHW.
I also think Joe won. But not by as much as others. Public demand for a rematch hasn't been there although it would be nice to see if Joe could have handled Mikkel without a broken hand. But that's just a personal opinion.

The comment about Kessler being unable to surpass Joe because of Joe's 0 is laughable. What about Ottke then? Is Ottke as good as Joe or Kess?
What if Brian Nielsen had retired 49-0? Would he then be as good as Marciano?
Undefeated and protecting the 0 is sooooooo overrated by some on this forum. Perhaps you'll some day be able to understand that the level of opposition has something to do with legacy as well.

When Brian Nielsen knocked out Jeremy Williams, did they have a parade for him in Denmark?

And yeah, the zero is overated a lot of times. Valuev almost got Marciano's record as well.

I only bring that up becomes the dumb americans had a parade for sorry ass Sam Peter when he did.

And he was "undefeated" and when he stepped up he went a whopping 6-3 with 2 ko's since.

Their fight wasn't that close. It's not like Calzaghe beat Kessler by only one point or something, it was 8-4 or 9-3.

Why would anyone need to be cautious with a "slapper"?

And that makes Joe's win over Kessler even better, and in 10 years when people are talking about who the best SMW ever was, Joe or Kessler - the last sentence of that argument will be Joe beat Kessler. Pretty easily.
Is Morales getting a boost because of his win over Pacquiao, it doesn't work like that man.

I think he is very capable of doing so, will he do it is another story.

I don't believe it was wide UD. Calzaghe won some rounds more convincingly, but I think Kessler edged out some of the closer ones making the score closer. I don't see anyone can give him only 3 or 4 rounds in that fight.

Exactly. I just watched the fight last night, its one of my favourite Calzaghe fights, and Joe really outclassed Mikkel. Even though Kessler put up a great, great fight.

Broken hand or no broken hand, the result would have been the same. And Kessler went onto berserk mode in round 12 and we all saw what happened, Joe went and fought his fight and still won.

I think you need to watch that fight again. First, remove any bias, though.
