I think that needs to be clarified because clearly that isn't common knowledge on these boards.

thank you. a lot here are talking crap saying "oh, its not a welterweight bout, why should cottos belt on the line?" without knowing this fact and that belts have been won and lost below the maximum limit

No i dont think so. it could be argued that technically its not a welterweight fight because if 145 is the limit, the fighters are being denied the right to weigh in at the welterweight limit of 147. if it was a welterweight fight everybody knows that you can weigh in at 147 or under. so if the limit is 145, you cant weigh in at 146 or 147, which is within welterweight, so therefore its not welterweight fight.

Being that it's a welterweight fight and both parties agreed upon 145, there isn't any reason why the belt shouldn't be on the line.
roach, not pac, asked for the cathweight...then cotto can ask anything back

is not cotto's fault that manny or roach don't like the 147. we all know that is roach that's trying to f@ck cotto with the catchweight

yes welterweight is 141-147lbs, meaning both boxers are free to weigh in at 145lbs if they so choose

however Pacquiao's team are insisting the Cotto fight be at a maximum of 145lbs, so it's a different limit

it does fall within the welterweight boundaries, but wouldn't be an actual welterweight fight due to the maximum weight being lower than it should be

IMO it's slightly cheap to gain the welterweight title at a lower catchweight, no matter how small the the difference. it doesn't exactly spoil the fight or mar my perception of Pacquiao or anything though

don't be too harsh on them... they aren't fans of boxing and don't know any better. they follow people, not the sport.

To the TS you do have a point but answer me this?
When has a fighter fighting at a certain weight ever entered a fight 5-6 pds under the limit?
              it doesnt happen
quit trying to justify pacs stance
Cotto should be allowed to weigh a max of 147 period
              no catch weight
if manny or freddy has a problem with it then they should fight JMM or Valero or someone at 140

It takes something away from the title match. In this case in particular when Pac could probably fight Cotto at 147lbs the same way he could at 145lbs.
Pea fought JCC at 145 lbs. so does that make that fight illegitimate?

cotto is fine w/ 145 lbs so there should be no problem.

let me make this clear: WW IS ANYTHING FROM 147-141 LBS. THAT MEANS PAC/COTTO IS A WW FIGHT!!!

if cotto wants to fight at 147 lbs, then he can stop negotiations w/ pac. its just that simple.

Hey, I'm all for the fight. (well actually I would have preferred Pac waited for Mayweather)

But I don't think it's strictly a welterweight bout, seeing as the boxers don't have the option to weight 147lbs, which is by right within the welterweight boundaries

                      Good point
That is where Im a little disappointed in Cotto
he said he would not fight under 147 and now he agreed to a weight of 145ish
                      we all have our price
I cant wait til Cotto knocks him out then the mystery that is pac man will no longer be
                      hahahha
