The fights were similar though and Cotto did get his ass up and found a way to win after being seriously hurt by Torres. I think if Ortiz would have continued to fight, not that it was his choice though, he would have been KTFO. He was badly damaged around both eyes and Maidana was throwing bombs and appeared to be in tremendous shape.

Cotto was mentally stronger and maturer at that point. Margarito is better and more relentless than Maidana too.

Maidana not only has heavy hands, but he can throw 1200 in a fight like he did against Kotelnik. Torres can't throw half of that without gassing.
