Dismal for Klitschko-Chagaev on ESPN Classics

Germany sure does know an exciting fight when they see one.
too bad 98% of boxing scribes think otherwise.

Ratings Dismal Beyond Dismal for Klitschko-Chagaev on ESPN Classics by John Chavez

Jun 25, 2009 - "Wow!" is all I have to say regarding the ratings for Wladimir Klitschko's recent heavyweight title fight against Ruslan Chagaev.

How far the big men have fallen in terms of popularity within the United States of America. There once was a time when the big boys were kings amongst the rest and drew the highest ratings in all of boxing. Apparently, just like everything else in this world, these are changing and the United States consumer demands more... more than what the current crop of heavyweight pretenders have to offer.

While Klitschko-Chagaev seemingly did an enormous number in terms of television ratings in Germany (rumors of 11 million viewers), the number here in the states is as follows according to Nielsen Media:

ESPN Classics - Wladimir Klistchko vs. Ruslah Chagaev - 2pm PST - 151,000 Total Average Viewers

All I know is that I sure hope ESPN didn't shell out any significant fee to broadcast this embarrassing display of heavyweight boxing.

With programming that only draws 151,000 viewers, it's no wonder that boxing is no longer broadcasted over the major television networks. Being that Wladimir Klistchko might be one of the most boring champions of recent times, it's probably a good thing for boxing that the masses aren't exposed to his style of fighting.

You figure out what that number means...

I read that earlier, that's what happens when there is no advertising that the fight is actually going to be on and the only people that know about it are the hardcore fans.

5:00 P.M. on a Saturday. No one knows who Chagaev is anyway. No one really cares for Wlad either to be honest. And it was on Classic, not regular ESPN.

Oh yeah and was there an ad for the fight at all? Did people even know it was on Classic? I go on this board for news every day and I din't know it was on Classic until a few days before the fight.

        I'm glad it wasn't advertised something ******.

Will give casual fans a bad view of boxing.

I got into boxing because it was exciting, Wladimir, even as a HARDCORE boxing fan, makes it so hard to watch him.

they advertised but only 151000 viewers in the united states? Wow! That's horrible! I've always said the klits were boring but I never thought his stock had dropped that much.I'm honestly shocked it's that bad.if that's the case we really need to get arreola & haye into the ring with the klits.the heavyweight division is on life support! I once said recently that the divisions been in transition for 10 years but it's alot worse than I imagined.these eastern Europeans better start fighting more in the states so people can get familiar or we might have to many heavyweight boxing events in north America.this was horrible to read.I hope those #s are wrong...we need slugfest wars not fencing matches.wlad is the one man who could change it...start taking risks & fight to destroy not to win.we need another holyfield, tyson, lewis, etc.boxing needs to thrive in the states are it may die off.thank heavens for the lower weight classes.151000 viewers I'm still shocked.heavyweight boxing is dying off fast.all you klit fans I hope you read this thread because it's NOT good for boxing if the heavyweights are not succeeding in the states.

It doesnt matter if their were ads, it was on espn classics or regular espn, nobody gives a **** about heavyweight boxing anymore. ufc is on spyke tv everyday, people rather see that. boxing needs to get rid of the heavyweight division because thats whats killing boxing.
