Did Calzaghe's lack of one punch power ...

.. hinder his popularity in the US? He was obviously a very good boxer, he had the skills and a decent chin. Some great wins (Lacy, Kessler, Eubank) Some okay wins and some plain terrible opposition.

Was it has lack of KO power that hindered his popularity? I mean I rewatched the Lacy and Kessler fights yesterday and he had Lacy at least 3 times but just couldn't finish him. Manfredo even though he was stopped wasn't really in too much trouble when it comes to a KO he just couldn't block Joe's pucnhes and wasn't returning. I don't think he would ever be able to finish Kessler damaged hands or not. Hopkins never really looked in that much trouble he just outpointed him and RJJ was there for the taking and he didn't finish him.

    What do you think guys?

No one really cared that some guy from wales came and beat popkins and jones apart from boxing fans and people from the UK.

I sense some major insecurity approaching this thread.

Calzaghe has a solid fan base with the Italian-American community in New York{where I reside} because of his lineage from his fathers side and the flag on his shorts. Italian Dragon and all that. It may be his style that turns some fans off. Why isn't Mayweather popular in UK?

joe in his early days had great power, he KO'd the first twenty guys he faced and even decked the iron chinned eubank.

joe always had a strange style, he never really turned over his punches and imo that might have been one of the reasons why his hands gave out on him.

another thing is when he does hurt his opponent he finishes them off with a barrage of punches. watch JMM or mayweather, when they hurt their guys they throw a handful of accurate, sharp punches that finshes the other man off (e.g. JMM vs diaz). calzaghe is the opposite he goes crazy and throws 15-20 punches and ends up getting the TKO not the KO.

anyways part of me does think that calzaghes popuarity was hindered by his lack of KO power, americans do love their power punchers fighters like, tito, tyson, were mainstream and even limited fighters with good power have had success e.g. pavlik.

Yeah because its so boring watching someone throw over 1,000 punches!!! Its so boring for a boxer to try to entertain the fans by going to war with his opponents. Calzaghe is what boring is! Isn't it???

Nassem Hammed was popular in the States due to his concussive one punch power, but his personality certainly helped.

I think power was the one vital ingredient missing from Joe's game...If he had a knock out punch to match the work rate then I think he would of stepped up the level of opposition a lot earlier. Saying that he does have a decent ko ratio!

I think its possible waiting till he last 2 or so fights to go to America hurt it also, which Americans did he fight before Lacy which were well known? his hands are his own fault btw i got a dvd and he was wrapping them himself or something ****** and basically destroyed his hands. As some people said he used to be a big puncher.
