Amateur boxing means less than a drop of rat piss when you're judging a fighter's professional career.
Howard Davis Jr. was one hell of an Amateur, but he was never able to capture a title in the pros.
There are tons of examples of amazing Amateurs who never made any impact in the professional ranks.
As a professional ; Joe's career is pretty lackluster overall.
I sympathize with him for his title reign, and I don't thin khe gets enough credit for that.
He was very similar to my boy B-Hop in that respect ; they both inherited ****ty divisions, and nobody really paid much attention to them because their skills completely overshadowed the skills of their challengers.
Eubank, Lacy and Kessler are all solid wins. With Eubank being the best IMO.
Jones Jr. doesn't account for much, considering Roy's age and level of deterioration.
Hopkins is probably his best win overall, and a lot of people thought he lost that fight.
If he'd only stuck around for one or 2 more fights, he may be looked at a bit better these days.Comment

Anyone who uses that as basis for critcising Calzaghe is just a fool and not worth your time. See Marvin Hagler."floyd fought in 5 divisions, calzaghe only fought in 2..."
did you know calzaghe won 3 ABA titles as an amatuer in 3 different weight classes, welterweight, light middleweight and middleweight? he was fighting full grown men too. he's the only fighter ever to do that.
he also came across american middleweight champion chris byrd and knocked him out and we all know about chris. calzaghe was robbed of going to the olympics because he wouldnt fight in some remote place for one time when the board knew full well he would have destroyed the guy sent instead representing the UK.Comment

I respect what your saying, I am a fan of Calzaghe and think he is a great fighter... but come on, did you really need to bring Floyd into it? People knock Calzaghe at times... so there was no need to bring that into it. That said, I do understand what your saying."floyd fought in 5 divisions, calzaghe only fought in 2..."

Even though I think people are more talking about his professional career, and not his amateur... I get what you mean he is still a great fighter who has achieved a lot, even in the amateurs. However most people talk about his professional career, which I disagree with people when they knock his achievements.
At the end of the day, Calzaghe is a great fighter... undefeated, many title defenses and has great skills... in my opinion, even winning a world title is a great achievement in itself... even if you was to lose it straight away, how can anyone knock his achievement because the fighter has still won a world title which is a great achievement.Comment

130..........135.............140..........147
doesnt equate to
168........175........200.........200+
So the paralell is logically ridiculous in the first placeComment

That is a good point that is rarely made to. It is so easy to cruise through the lower divisions. Not so much when you get up in weight.Comment

I wouldnt say it was "so easy" lol but it certainly doesnt make as significant a difference as it does at the higher weights which are more spaced out.Comment
