Calzaghe and Dawson: a double standard about fighting old opponents

Dawson is not claiming to be the "best" by beating old men though, and never had the opportunity to facet these guys at a younger age.

Whereas Calzaghe did, but decided on facing the older versions.

they're are both doing the same thing, and i dont mean fighting old people, they are fighting the people who bring the most money to the table.

Calzaghe was champ for years and broke records so he deserves to chase the money fights. Dawson has no right to chase the money yet he has'nt done ****. Looks like he might be the next P4P cherry pickin *****. He don't want Cloud and he never wanted anything to do with Diaconu.

Fighting Tarver again was a joke but I've heard plenty of people calling for the Johnson rematch. That fight should have been instead of Tarver.

Dawson needs to up his competition because he hasn't done much since defeating Adamek.

At the end of the day, most fighters will lean towards money and trying to get on one of the big TV networks like Showtime or HBO.

For Calzaghe: Hopkins was past his prime and 40+ but he held the LH Ring belt so that was fair game.

Jones Jr. on the other hand was SHOT and based on what Joe was saying before the match was even made about where Roy was at in his career....why take that fight?

Joe doesn't "deserve" anything.

He milked it fighting scrubs when there were REAL titles and champions to fight.

He was WBO champ for years and that ain't saying much.

Any half-assed fighter can hold a WBO title for years.

Those writers at The Ring like Rosenthal and Raskin are very biased, so their ratings don't mean ****.

He should fight a few prime opponents like Diaconu and Cloud.

Interesting how Joe Calzaghe took so much abuse on this forum for fighting two old fighters, Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr.

Chad Dawson will now have FOUR fights in a row against 40 year olds, but the same people who were so hard on Calzaghe are not saying anything - in fact they are making excuses for Dawson.

The age 26 Dawson dropped TWO titles to avoid mandatories with prime opponents (Adrian Diaconu and Tavoris Cloud) in order to fight 40 year olds. As well, he avoided Diaconu in June 2007 and fought clubfighter Jesus Ruiz, and again avoided him early in 2008 to take the first fight with Johnson.

Calzaghe was old himself, he had been an amateur in the late 80s and pro since the early 90s and now is retired, while Dawson is in his 20s.

Why did Calzaghe take so much criticism, while Dawson gets away with it? I'm sure for pointing this out, I will receive a lot of criticism myself - but no one said much about those like bsrizpac who expressed their extreme displeasure with Calzaghe day after day in this forum .

Is there a double standard?

This is the way I feel. Calzaghe gets trashed verbally here while Dawson gets praises for fighting the world's geriatric ward.
