Not surprisingly Jackson’s comments infuriated Pacquiao supporters and the socially charged issue sparked debate throughout the boxing industry.

So the question remains, has Manny Pacquiao avoided fighting African American fighters?

Now there are a few points of contention in regards to Manny avoiding black fighters. The first is with Joan Guzman. Now Guzman isn’t African American, he’s from the Dominican Republic, but his style exemplifies the type of skill set that is representative of good African American fighters.

Guzman is very good defensively, fast, fights in a constant rhythm that he combines with solid footwork, and throws crisp combinations.

So even though Guzman is a Latin American of African descent his style is the epitome of what boxing people consider to be the quintessential African American style.

Now Joan Guzman won the WBO 122 pound title in 2002 while Manny Pacquioa was the IBF’s 122 pound champ. Pacquiao had won the title a year earlier and moved up to 126 pounds to face a close to his prime Marco Antonio Barrera in 2003 in a bout in which he was a heavy underdog.

Thus for the limited time that the two fighters were champs at that weight, a fight between the two wasn’t very plausible.

At the time a fight with the Filipino was a high risk low reward proposition because he didn’t start to become one of the sports transcendent starts until after he moved up and stopped Barrera. [details]
wow what an astute observation. wonder if jackson would care if he himself wasnt African American? I have lost some respect for Ms. Jackson on this one.

the best fighters at his weight have not been black. Does Pac need to implement an affirmative action policy to appease the reverse-discriminators? Boxingscene is a joke for posting this article.

What happened to the intelligent analysis?

Unfortunately I recommended this site to another as a good source of boxing analysis, less the ubiquitous and severely annoying pop up ads. I was wrong and I now I have to apologize because of garbage like this post. When the match stats are presented before every fight we see: weight, height, reach, stance, and record. I don't remember seeing race anywhere. That's because it has zero impact on the fight. No one should have to mention that. Next.

Manny knows his weaknesses that's why he fights Mexicans. No disrespect but Mexicans are in your face fighters from a young age.Black boxers mainly come from the old school, they hit and dont like getting hit, they are more athletic, they have movement and good defence.Check even Tyson used to duck shots,Mosley ducks shots,he moves and he punches but still has power.

The first reaction Roach gave when confronted with the Mayweather question,he said Floyd would make an ugly fight because he's so slick.

Styles make fights and should Manny decide to fight a black fighter he will be knocked out.

That's why Black fighters are not on PPV, They're plain out boring, who the **** wants to see dancing and running around? I can go see them to that at my corner.Mexicans are the big money attactions.so I dont blame pacman.....but Like I said before Manny would destroy any black fighter in the lightweight and superlight division and including Mayrunner.

                  Great article!!!!!!!

Especially how it opens up mentioning Joan Guzman who is not African-American at all and comes from the Dominican Republic. What a fine example.

In all seriousness, I'm very surprised this article was allowed to even be put up on boxingscene. A terrible article on a ridiculous subject with awful examples.

oh, and how could Pacquiao duck the great Zahir Raheem!!!!!

Different of opinion I suppose. He made Soto miss by a lot and often. Soto landed around 20% of his punches, Guzman landed around 40% or so.

He was doin **** like that the entire fight. And see when guzman was against the ropes? Blocking all those body shots, shoulder roll.

his face was a tiny bit puffy after the first round. Lennox lewis even commented on it saying how he even would get puffy after the first round or two. It wasn't swollen.

Find the stats. Soto had a very low percentage and guzman was much higher. Same **** Mayweather does to win fights.
Here this guy goes defending a bum with no heart ...its obvious that Pac made the right decision in not even entertaining a fight with this heartless bum..just look at the direction of the careers of both of these two fighters. Pac up and Guz way down. Guz couldn't beat Pac's last 10 opponents and probable wouldn't even entertain a fight with them (maybe now he would seeing his career is in the toilet).
