Thread titles says Hatton-Pac disappoints ... What is disappointing about those numbers? 650k is a damn good number for non US-born boxers..

"Non-US born fighters"??? What does that have to do with anything? Both guys have made USA their fighting base for years.

"Disappointing" was a quote based on the increased marketing budget and activity. This fight was highly promoted.

Mark Wahlberg was just pumped because he was not sitting directly behind Bernard Hopkins for this fight~ (aka. the worst seat in the house). Denzel is a huge fight fan so that is not all that suprising.

that explains why our economy is in the rat hole if those HBS grads keep on rounding off numbers....

              Obus,

With all due respect, you do not have a broad (or deep) marketing or business perspective. I think you said as much in a previous post. Denzel and Mark don't even pay for their tix. This is a VOLUME business. Not an anecdotal business.

Example: How was tarver's star after KO'ing Roy Jones and starring in a Rocky movie?

It is middling fight results after substantial investments that led HBO to streamline the PPV calendar.

Fact is If you are not named Tyson or Delahoya you need to have a quality opponent before you can sell a fight. For somebody like Pacquiao who is not able to go to talk shows and dance with the C class stars to even sell 650k is not a disappointment.

                  Q..
The point you are trying to convey is that Mayweather sells more than Pac..
At this point forward with all the buzz in the media and the mystic that might have been instilled to the mind of the non-hardcore fans by the recent performance of Pac, Who do you think will sell more Pac or Money?

I think where we disagree is on our definitions of success. I say its not based strictly on numbers, while u seem to say otherwise.

In a marketing sense I see where u comin from, u expect bigger returns from the bigger marketing investment....in that sense, sure it could be seen as a disappointment. But the thread title implies that the fight itself overall is a disappointment based on a singular number of 650,000. First of all, that is a relative number, and thats what I mean by extenuating circumstances. There are economic factors in play that wasn't present when u compare those numbers to PPVs from as early as last year. And despite what u mentioned about people may still be willing to shell out money for PPVs even now, common sense dictates that people wont if they can get away with it. Common sense says u would want to find a cheaper way. I for one chose not to pay coz there was like fight parties sprouting up everywhere.(I also didnt pay for the Mosley/marg, Cotto/Marg)...and Ive been a hardcore fan from day one. Why? Because times are rough yo.

Another factor to consider when evaluating a supposedly "low" # of 650,000 is that despite all the marketing, casual fans still had never heard of Pac or just vaguely familiar with Hatton coming in to this fight. When Hoya was doing those high numbers, he was already a known commodity to the casual fan. But if u broaden the definition of success, u have to include the buzz created before and especially after this fight,... it is hugely successful in terms of future fights. When u hear about celebs talkn about the fight, the ridiculous amnts of press its getting...thats is like feeln the pulse of the mainstream...and isn't that just another form of marketing? It is only logical to expect that Pac from now on will have bigger and bigger PPV numbers. He is now known to the public. In that sense, the Pac/Hatton fight is hugely successful...in getting the word out, or in marketing terms, getting the Pac brand name out there....and the fact that the product was of such high quality doesn't hurt either. U can market an iphone all u want, but if its a **** product u will learn not to buy one in da future. what that fight proved was that the brand name "pac" is a high-quality product that people will be willing to pay for from now on....and that should be considered a success in any book.
