Don't get me wrong, he was a great heavyweight, but the media made him out to be more than he was.

He was in a lot of close fights, and received at least three gift decisions in his pro career.

He was knocked down by the smaller Englishman Cooper in 1963.

He was knocked down and defeated by Joe Frazier at age 29.

He went life and death for 15 rounds and was knocked down by a limited journeyman called Chuck Wepner.

He fought a lot of opponents like Blin and Bonaventa with whom he had about a 12" reach advantage.
Wish someone could explain how you cut part of a post to reply to it?
Don't know about a lot of close decisions, sure he got a couple of decisions that maybe he didn't deserve but he fought at the top end for 15 years on and off. Its like knock downs you fight good fighters you get knocked down and get involved in close fights.
Sure Cooper knocked him down, Cooper could hit. If Cooper was small for a HW, had he moved down a weight class and not cut so easily and he would be spoke of with far more respect. But Cooper had a hell of a left hook and Ali got up and in the next round finished the fight.
Sure Frazier knocked him down (how many fighters would have got up?) and beat him. Joe Frazier in his time was a fantastic fighter, Ali (not prime Ali) beat him 2-1.
Life and Death with Wepner? No he coasted through to a very convincing win and slipped at one point.
Yes he had the reach on a few fighters, it is part of why he is rated the greatest heavyweight because he has most of the tools needed.
Ali had weaknesses but if I had to pick a fighter to win a fight at heavyweight I would choose Ali because IMO he would find a way.
I think I am a fair bit older than most on here so I remember Ali from the start. Most me included were not used to such a braggart and wanted him to get knocked out to be honest. I honestly was frightened for the boy against Liston.
But Ali backed up what he said and he was the best HW.
Best P4P no I go with SRR on that.
Did he have weaknesses, sure the perfect fighter hasn't been built yet.
Did he say some ****** things at times, sure but he grew up in front of camera and we all say ****** things as we mature.
But he was the best HW IMO.

He fought Wepner when he was washed up and Frazier is an ATG. He beat Norton, knocked out the invincible Foreman to name a few. I don't see how he's overrated...

I don't think he's overrated or underrated really, I think history has treated him well and fairly but as with any fighter there will be people who make him out to be more than he was. Saying that, I do believe he is the greatest heavyweight of all time and a top 5 pound for pound fighter of all time. Beating ATGs and a lot of top contenders of his day, came out on top in the Golden Era of heavyweights and was involved in something like 25 major world title fights, it would be 30 if the NABF title were counted, the NABF was held in much higher regard back then than it is now, but it doesn't matter.

People should just see the Wepner fight for themselves. Ali gave him a beating but Wepner took all of it until the 15th round. It was only a little more competitive than Larry Holmes vs Randall 'Tex' Cobb with Wepner having his only success with blatant rabbit punches.

Indeed, the only times Wepner had success were when they were in the clinches and he would rabbit punch Ali, which made Ali mad and he would then start retaliating and obviously when Wepner scored that 'knockdown'.

If you watch the end of the 4th round Ali gets and extra 15 seconds 1:15 before the start of the 5th.

15 SECONDS!!!!!!!!! Not 2-3mins you goofs.

after the flash knockdown to wepner who btw is one of the toughest fighters of all time, he completely dominated him and nearly killed him. I've never seen Ali so pissed before.

And there is nothing wrong with being knocked down by Joe Frazier and Cooper.

He lost 3 years of his prime and he's sure to have close fights when you fight the caliber of opponents he did. If Ali is overrated then every boxer who ever stepped foot in the ring is overrated as well.
