Ray Leonard.
Can a black fighter ever be the next "Golden Boy?"

Yes I do but your missing the main point. You have to be good FIRST, then you can have the attention and be marketable.
A Rod is a bad example to your argument becuase he's the best player in baseball...lol.
Beckham was the best at his sport and arguably for a decade so was Oscar. I think there's a lot of really good athletes in their sport that have the ability but don't have the charisma or the looks, so they don't get the same attention.
Once in a while you get all of those attributes together and you get guys like A-Rod, Oscar, Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant etc.
The only athlete that sort of fits your argument is the Russian tennis player Anna Kornikova. She wasn't really that good but her looks made her marketable but thats about the only example I can think of.
Bottom line is, you have to win and be good FIRST. Then everything else will come.
listen buddy, im not missing the friggin point. im just not totally agreeing wiht you. pffft.
we're BOTH right. ok. ok ok ok ok...i suppose you have to be good first. and if youre charming..or can be "groomed" then maybe a good team will pick you up and market you to the rest of the world to be the poster child for whatever ****** sport you do.
being good isnt enough tho. thats my point. actually, no, i dunno what my point is anymore cos ive lost it.
*sigh*
btw. i dont watch a rod for his "baseball skills".Comment

De La Hoya is not so known outside of America and Mexico, whereas Ali is an icon in the same breath as Elvis or someone, and Tyson is the first boxer to pop into anyone's head when askedComment

First off, let me state. This is in no way, shape or form a racist thread. This is a serious question. Race is still very much an issue, especially in boxing, and I was wondering if a black fighter can be accepted and as popular like De La Hoya was in boxing. Also, shortly after Kelly Pavlik beat Taylor, there was an entire article written about him in ESPN the magazine. He had a huge picture of him in the front and about 4 pages in the magazine about him. He comes from a working class town, he's humble and he's white. They were pretty much preparing him to be the next face of boxing. I have a subscription to this magazine. I can't remember the last time that I saw that much publicity to any other boxer, and as we all know, there have been many fighters to accomplish more than what he has so far.Comment

Who cares? Your ethnocentric agenda is not necessary here. What does that have to do with the topic? If he was fighting before Leonard was born (53 years ago) then that explains why most on this board don't give a **** about him.Last edited by joseph5620; 04-15-2009, 02:20 PM.Comment
