Race is still very much an issue, especially in boxing, and I was wondering if a black fighter can be accepted and as popular like De La Hoya was in boxing. Also, shortly after Kelly Pavlik beat Taylor, there was an entire article written about him in ESPN the magazine. He had a huge picture of him in the front and about 4 pages in the magazine about him. He comes from a working class town, he's humble and he's white. They were pretty much preparing him to be the next face of boxing. I have a subscription to this magazine. I can't remember the last time that I saw that much publicity to any other boxer, and as we all know, there have been many fighters to accomplish more than what he has so far.
hmm. as someone whos not as "into" boxing as most of you on here, im gonna give a bit of an "outsiders view" on this.

yes, definitely. its not really the athletes skill that makes him so so popular, its how hes marketed. so if he has a good pr team, he could be anything.

take that idiot beckham. hes in your face all the friggin time. is he all that great? nah. but hes become this face of soccer, that makes him popular. and someone just has to say.."hey hes awesome" and everyone believes it.

what a boxer has to do to become the next "golden boy" is become a celebrity. not necessarily a winner.

It's a personality thing, not a colour thing. Ali is the biggest thing there has ever been in boxing. I think de la hoya was an excellant fighter and big star, but i dont think he's as big overseas as a lot of americans like to think. Put it this way some woman walking down some street in the UK probably wouldnt have herd of De la hoya, but she'll know who Ali sugar ray leonard and Tyson are.

He was great when he was a youngster.

2nd of all.... Its how you carry yourself!!! Respect will carry you a long way! Not doing drugs...beating on women...making it rain $$...not loading your gloves and so on. Polite, smile, well educated and speak like you got some brains. fight the best beat the best you may have a shot at Golden boy status. winning a gold medal is a plus...dont think you can get that name unless you have that

It's not just personality: You have to be able to fight too. It has to be both: A great personality matched with performance in the ring.
