Floyd Mayweather Sr is not a great trainer

I dont know where people get this idea from. The guy is only know because of his son. name me one guy hes actually done well with.

saying Mayweather Jr. is laughable, Roger was his trainer pretty much all his pro career. thats like saying Roy Jones Sr is a fantastic trainer because he started his son off in boxing. its just dumb. Sr was in jail since 2003, 3 years before Mayweather even went into the Olympics.

I saw little to no difference in Hatton against Malignaggi, and he actually did better when he went back to his old mauling style.

Mayweather did nothing with Joan Guzman other than screw up bad and let his fighter come in overweight and not fight. Guzman was trained by Don House up till 2007 and I think someone else before that. and surprise surprise, Guzman is now being trained by Roberto Garcia. in other words, Mayweather Sr did nothing there.

saying he did a good job with De La Hoya is a stretch, at best. if anything, he got hit more by Vargas than most people expected, and he didnt look in any way improved after training with Mayweather Sr.

so Im confused...what makes Sr such a wonderful trainer?

I pretty much agree with you, but don't expect many others to.

Afterall, his last name is "Mayweather".

Because during the Vargas-DLH fight he made some type of Chewbacca noise when he was giving instructions to DLH

Im not too impressed with his poetry either. Joke Coach Roach? thats clever, never would have thought of rhyming Roach and coach.

I will give him one thing...hes pretty good at stirring up fights. which would be a legitimate reason to have him in your corner/camp, just for the publicity. but some people actually seem to think hes an amazing trainer...as in, what he does for the fighter.

I agree. Fans on here go with who ever is flavour of the month.

blackirish........... i to have always maintained that Mayweather made DLH more hittable. Just watch his fights with Castillejo, and Vargas.

They talk as though Mayweather remarkably improved Guzman's defence. Guzman has ALWAYS had a good defence. You only gotta see the Barrios fight to know that. Plus Guzman had over 400 amateur fights.

              I pretty much agree.

I thought that some of the changes he made to DLH's style were for the worse. Seeing him on the ropes trying to shoulder roll against Vargas was cringe-worthy.

The Pacquiao-Hatton fight will be a big test. I think that the fight is winnable for Hatton, but he isn't going to win it on skill. He's not a Guzman or a Floyd Jr, so Mayweather being able to recognise Hatton's strengths and weaknesses enough to take him to victory will be impressive.

At the present time, there is no way he deserves to be considered great IMO.

Fair enough if that is your opinion, but your whole argument can be reputed by someone asking...have you ever seen him up close and personal? Has he ever trained you?

Also Floyd snr was a terrific fighter, if you haven't watched highlights of him, you should. Because he was technically a brilliant fighter, he just had major flaws like a severe lack of power.

He trained floyd everyday for 20 years, he deserves MAJOR credit for floyd jnr, and I think you got your facts wrong, floyd snr was training him as a pro and went to jail soon before jnr won the super feather world title. All trainers are different and some mix better with certain fighters...in the case of de la hoya he had a fighter who wasn't too compatible with this style in my opinion but its hard to say how much effect he had on oscar.

Guzman was majorly improved defensively under floyd snr, if you watch fights of guzman at feather he is basically a fast slugger, he is a much better fighter now and shoulder rolls pretty well, in terms of his weight and stuff im not sure what is going on there, and to be honest the trainer is partly responsible for a fighters weight, but in the end it is up to the fighter himself, maybe floyd snr didn't want to waste his time with Guzman.

Yeah I personally don't rate him as a trainer. I the rivalry between him and Freddie Roach quite funny to be truthful, they're not in the same league.
