Why does Floyd get the blame for the Cotto fight never happening?

What did he say on national TV? What he always says, that he'll fight whoever his company puts in front of him. That's what he says, that's the image he carries. Why does he have to call Floyd out for people to believe he wanted to fight him? It's absolutely ridiculous.
And after Cotto beat Shane and Floyd beat Hatton, that fight would have been huge and would have cemented Floyd's WW legacy. There is no argument against that.Comment

But the thing is, why did he have to? Floyd aint ******, he knows what the best fight would have been. Floyd needs Cotto to call him names and ****? Hell no. Floyd doesn't get rattled like that. He has everything planned, he knew he would never fight Cotto, and that's fine.
I just hate this Cotto didn't actively pursue. He said he wanted to fight him, he made that clear several times. But because he didn't go further than that it's like "oh clearly he didn't want it because he didn't call Floyd a *****". ****'s ridiculous.
Cotto wanted to fight. Floyd wasn't hot on it. Floyd didn't duck him, he just didn't feel that it made financial sense at the time, and Cotto is too proud to go chasing him around like JMM is Pac so he said **** it. End of story.Comment

And how about all the articles on this site with Cotto talking about Floyd? I guess that doesn't count.

The time was ripe after the Shane fight on HBO with MILLIONS watching to talk about Mayweather.
Getting all brave in an article and showing courage to those HBO cameras are two different things..
Cotto didn't want to fight Mayweather.
He would have been a GOOD win...not a LEGACY building win..because Cotto has NEVER been a great fighter.
Tony proved that.Comment

Good post. The only part I disagree with is the part about Floyd knowing he wasn't going to fight Cotto. I felt for a while Floyd seemed to think that the Cotto fight would happen eventually. The same type of stuff he said about Hatton he said about Cotto when asked about him. Its was like he knew that seed was planted. The situation with Top rank may have not helped but I always got the feeling that Floyd liked talking about Cotto. Your right Cotto did say he would fight Floyd but only when someone brought it up to him. Cotto is a champion and I doubt there is/was anyone at 147lbs that he would say No I won't fight him. I think part of it was his mentality was he didn't need Floyd but I wish he would have pressed the issue. Even just a little.
And there is a huge $$$ difference and risk difference in Hatton and Cotto. Floyd was licking his chops at Hatton cause he knew he'd make a ton of money and get another W. With Cotto, it's more of a risk and less money. It's just not a no brainer-business decision like Hatton was. That's why I don't think that you can put that much stock into the pattern that preceded hatton/Floyd into Floyd/Cotto. Two totally different circumstances.
Hatton opening his mouth isn't what made Floyd take the fight ya know? It was the money and the fact that Floyd knew he'd win.
Floyd probably knows he'd beat Cotto too, but the money just isn't there. But I agree that if Cotto had beat Margarito, than beat DLH, he'd be the #1 opponent if Floyd did come back.Comment

And of course you dismiss articles cause they disprove your point.Comment

I definitely hear what you're saying, but it's just not in his personality.

When Cotto was coming off of the back to back wins over Judah and Mosley, and Mayweather had just taken out Hatton, Cotto wanted the fight. Mayweather pulled the whole retirement thing.
Cotto was far and away the greatest challenge to him, standing right in front of him prime for a legendary fight. I am not a Mayweather hater, but that pissed me off something awful they didnt get that fight done.Comment
