plus he fought pacquiao at 130 a few months later.

he fought the #1 guy at 130 at the time in barrera and he went on to fight the #2 p4p (soon to be #1) at the time in pacquiao.

to say he ducked a lower tier fighter in guzman just doesn't hold much water tbh.

it'll be like haye fighting wlad and vitali and people saying he ducked audley harrison because he fought fres oquendo in between the klit fights.
Name one! One fighter Pac faced who has Guzman's handspeed, accuracy, defense and slickness? Plus we all know Guzman's chin is Barrios and Soto

C'mon be serious now, Mr.Tua Man because we all know Pac never faced a fighter like Guzman and neither did JMM

How can you even make such a comparison when Guzman was ranked #1 and a title holder?? Crazy talk and you know it. Unify the damn belts and become the man to force yourself a fight with bigger opponents, but marquez went with the easy opponent. Marquez got lucky Bob Arum didn't want pacman fighting guzman either because if not, they would have fought in Canada and marquez would be left crying in a dark corner somewhere by himself sucking on his thumb curled up in the fetal position.

so we got 2 HOFers who has fought almost every big name from 126-130 and they DUCKED a joan guzman?

remember , manny and jmm moved up to 135 in 2008.

guzman's biggest win for me was soto at the end of 2007.

            just doesn't add up.

if he wanted a fight with those 2 he needed a lot more name and resume.

1-2 years later to now......he STILL doesn't have a name or resume.

Depends on if he's staying at 135 or going to 140.

If I were him, I'd stay at 135 and take on someone. He'll probably go to 140 and fight campbell methinks, but I think that would be a mistake. Not saying he'll lose but 140 is pushing it for marquez and campbell could be a very tough opponent for him at that weight.

He had the fight with Pacquiao in the bag at 135, freddie roach, bob arum and pacquiao ALL wanted Guzman. Then something changed after soto. Either bob arum didn't like guzman's style of fighting and didn't think it would be exciting (although that doesn't explain why they fought solis) or bob feared something about guzman. IMO he didn't like the risk/reward because lets face it, pacman has NEVER fought a slick boxer like guzman so there is a bit of a fear of the unknown....how would pacman do against a fighter like that?? Either way pacquiao cant really be faulted here because he was the star and was in the position to fight bigger names, etc. marquez on the other hand wasn't there yet and had no excuse to pass up on guzman when he had the shot.

Yes, sure promoters have a lot to do with it and they probably should receive the most of the blame (for example Calzaghe comes to mind), but ultimately the fighter can choose who they want to fight. JMM could have unified the belts and placed himself in a fantastic position if he beat guzman, rather than beating Rocky who everyone and their mama knew JMM would beat. I mean Rocky got beat by Soto and Soto was ranked #2 fighting the #1 guy Guzman. Rocky wasn't even in the picture!
im sure a guy that has been in some of the toughest situations in the ring and is chasing pacs nuts like crazy to actually beat his ass and not just for the paycheck isnt scared of joan guzman.

not to mention that golden boy promotions has much more say than the marquez's camp. when you pair fighters under your banner, its easier to make fights, and you come out with more money. the first opponent was under their banner. the second opponent was under their banner.

the fight was originally going to be on PPV so it even ads more to why they wanted to pair up 2 of their fighters. and when you think about marketability...Juan Manuel Marquez vs Rocky Juarez was going to bring in more money than Juan Manuel Marquez vs Joan Guzman, not just for GBP but for Marquez.

Take joan's 0 .... And you will HAVE your payday!! Guaranteee

That could turn out to be ugly like the Derick Gainer track meet. JMM's best opponent choices are those willing to stand and trade because thats where his timing prowess shines. Guzman could give him problems like Chris John did, which is why he has no business calling out Floyd.

he was ranked #1 AFTER pac-barrera-marquez all fought AND left 130 , natas!

                      what are you talking about?

barrera , marquez , pacquiao and morales were all ranked above guzman at 130!

first it was barrera and morales on top at 130 when guzman wasn't even ranked at 130 yet.

after pacquiao moved up to 130......it was barrera , morales and pacquiao ranked above guzman.

after morales retired and marquez moved up......it was barrera , marquez and pacquiao ranked above guzman.

those 4 guys all fought each other when they were ranked #1-3 in the division!

and you're gonna say they ducked the #4 guy?

that's like saying guzman ducked valero when valero was #1 at 130 when the only reason valero became #1 at 130 was because guzman left!
