Diaz couldve won last night

I agree man... even though Marquez ended up knocking Diaz out, I was much more impressed with the performance of Juan Diaz.He really could have. I was actually surprised how cleanly Diaz was able to hit Marquez at times, much more than I expected. but if he had changed up what he did just a tiny bit, he could have walked away with a win. if Diaz could have pushed Marquez back to the ropes with his jab and then fought in spurts, going in and out with combinations and stuck with it, he would not only have avoided the knockout but would have won a clear unanimous decision. he did that at times during the fight and was very sucessful, he shouldve been more discplined about that.
but in the end, Marquez ate him up with those uppercuts and right hands. most the time when they traded in the center of the ring, Marquez got the better of it, but against the ropes it was a whole different story. thats what all that experience will do for ya.
ah well, great fight.
The 25 year old really took it to the legendary Marquez without fear, and looked great in the early rounds.
I'm disappointed that Diaz's chin gave out though... Marquez is too sharp (like Mark Johnson).Comment

It's about who is landing though. I can see it 4-4 as round 3 was close, but after round 3 Marquez started slipping the majority of the punches on the ropes and throwing back beautiful combinations that were landing.I agree and disagree with this. Marquez was adjusting, but in the 9th before the knock down it had appeared that Diaz had already adjusted. He was using the jab, something he had been using early on, and pushing him to the ropes. Both fighters actually made good adjustments, Marquez obviously made the better adjustments.
I don't think that Marquez had a choice on mixing it up. If he would have been his old defensive self he would have lost because he wouldn't have thrown enough punches even if he did land at a higher percentage. Marquez was forced to fight and stepped up to the plate beautifully.
He could have went a bit more into a defensive shell but I think it would have costed him the fight and I think he knew this. He tried to start slow and Diaz wouldn't let him.
Diaz made him fight his fight, even the announcers said Marquez was landing cleaner shots but Diaz was more effective because he was forcing his fight one him. I had it 5-3, the reason being Marquez looked far more uncomfortable in the fight until the cut.
If they finished the fight I think Diaz could have won with his sheer output especially since you could see Marquez was tiring till he got that last wind when he realized he had Diaz hurt. That said if they fight again i say that Marquez wins again.
It's not like you can say Marquez was to inactive, when he was throwing around 80 punches a round . Marquez took over after round 6 and controlled the rest of the fight. Diaz might have had a little comeback like Casamayor was able to, but he still would have lost.
Also I disagree with the thread starter. Him fighting in spurts might have been more controlled, but it would have given Marquez a better time to counter and unleash his shots. Rentless pressure was the key, but Marquez figured that out too.Comment

Diaz played into Marquez's fighting style. Marquez is a killer counter puncher and Marquez was countering a lot during their exchanges but I don't know if anyone noticed cuz Diaz looked more active and he wasn't showing signs of being hurt even though I know Marquez hurt him atleast once in every round. I think that finally caught up with Diaz and Marquez who was less active but more accurate was able to connect flush finally from Diaz slowing down and getting sloppy. If they fight again, Marquez will beat him again. He really could have. I was actually surprised how cleanly Diaz was able to hit Marquez at times, much more than I expected. but if he had changed up what he did just a tiny bit, he could have walked away with a win. if Diaz could have pushed Marquez back to the ropes with his jab and then fought in spurts, going in and out with combinations and stuck with it, he would not only have avoided the knockout but would have won a clear unanimous decision. he did that at times during the fight and was very sucessful, he shouldve been more discplined about that.

i had diaz ahead in the fight, but as soon as he felt the blood he was done. but i was really impressed with the accuracy of marquez punches. specially after that right hook in the 9th, he landed a great combo right in diaz chin that f... him up.Comment
