Don't forget Peter Manfredo..i don't see how he's worthy of joe's precious time and not Dawson..lol

    Joe actually has baby balls..

He was supposed to fight the winner of Echols/Brewer but that F*G chose the LOSER..Brewer..hahahaha

The Echols incident puts Joe's ****ty career in perspective.

No other fighter on earth could get away with such a b*tch ass move.

I've been thinking more about this and I still don't really get it. I've googled but couldn't find anything that helped me understand it either. In 2002, Hopkins said he wanted to fight Calzaghe, Calzaghe said he wanted to fight Hopkins. Hopkins verbally agreed to a deal brokered by Showtime, whereby he would be paid $3 million. Contracts were drawn up. Then he suddenly said he wouldn't fight for less than $6 million, and pulled out when Showtime said no to that. Are you saying that when he agreed to $3 million, he didn't know how much of his purse would go to King, and he only doubled his purse demand after finding that out?

And the other thing I don't get is that Hopkins took a meaningless mandatory for far less money instead of the Calzaghe fight - surely just as high a percentage of that much lower purse would have been taken by King?
Dave, were you following the sport back then? The Hopkins-King saga was widely reported. I wasn't privy to any documents so I can't say for certain; I can only tell you what I remember. I think Hopkins probably weighed the risks and said no. He's pretty paranoid and I would be too if I found King and Warren - two close friends - negotiating terms. No one ever leaves those camps happy. Mind you, 3 million wasn't exactly what Hopkins wanted anyway. This is a guy who turned down 6 million to fight Roy Jones. Sometimes costs outweigh risk. But it doesn't mean a fighter is avoiding another. Case in point: Shane Mosley turned down big money from Oscar De La Hoya for a third fight simply because he wanted more and felt he deserved it. Then turned around and fought Winky Wright for less. And lets not forget Shane was the clear favorite going into that fight. But was he avoiding Oscar by doing that? Hardly. Fighters do what fighters do.

Makes sense. I agree that "Hopkins didn't want the fight at that time for whatever reason" is fairer than claiming he avoided Calzaghe.

I did follow boxing back then and I don't remember reading about the King-Hopkins bad blood at the time, but my memory isn't what it used to be.

Yah man. And regardless of what Hopkins' reason was, credit has to be given to Joe for trying to make the fight.

More revisionism in order to promote your hate agenda.

Interview with Jay Larkin of Showtime from December 2002:
"But to be fair to Joe, he's had some terrific fights on the books that have fallen apart at the last minute," continued Larkin. "It's almost like he's snakebit and he's had to face replacement guys who have like two, three, four weeks notice and it seems like it just keeps happening and it's apparently legitimate. I have no reason to think it's not legitimate because all these guys are independent of Frank, they're coming in from other promoters.

"The Charles Brewer fight (in April) held on and it was a great fight. There was a moment where we thought we had an Antwun Echols fight made and it fell apart."

Showtime tried to make the fight with Echols, it fell apart, and Larkin made clear that that wasn't Calzaghe's fault. So the Brewer fight was made instead.
