    Not necessarily...

If he's promoting his own fights, he's gotta dish out money for promotions, TV ads, pressers, etc...things a fighter that's being promoted by another company doesn't pay for. So in the end unless Cotto's got high capital, he'd end up probably making less in the end.

I go back to the similarity with Record labels. Rappers talk about starting their own labels,. but they 99.9% of the time need distributors (guys who put the CDs in stores...Interscope, Universal, etc). Them doing it themselves can mean the difference between shipping 100,000 copies and shipping 1,000,000.

Take a page from SRL's career

Cotto could always take a page from Sugar Ray Leonard's book and hire a rep like lawyer Mike Trainer to handle all promotional issues and cut out the traditional "promoter" altogether.

          got to disagree man....

          i know what u mean..

but is not like bob arum is spending millions in cottos image now...

he already did.... he barely have to promote anything about him now....

          a prove of this...

cottos own ppv. card.. arum knows that he will fill his pocket no matter what.. so i think at this stage miguel has the following.. and the money to do that...

But Cotto still isn't paying for anything, all he has to do is train, fight, and show up to press conferences. When Oscar went out on his own he was already becoming (if not already became) a crossover superstar, Cotto is not there yet, but could be on his way after this year.

Floyd is a similar situation. After he went out on his own, he had some decent attendance numbers, but he needed GBP to REALLY put him in the spotlight and get him the money he wanted. But Floyd couldn't have done it on his own merit (then at least). Cotto should focus on getting to the top and then worry about promoting, because that itself is a whole other beast. I'm more than positive GBP will be knockin on his door if he cashes out of his contract at the end of the yr.

                      Not neccessarily ...

He may not have to dish out any money. Casinos, and sports venues pay big (site and promotional) fees to lure lucrative boxing events. Read "Four Kings" by Kimball; it highlights the careers of Leonard, Hagler, Hearns and Duran. The book outlines some of what Leonard did career wise; it's doable for Cotto assuming he has the right representation. By the way, for those of you (like me) that had the pleasure of seeing any off the "Four Kings" live, this book is a must read ... it's excellent.
