On the contrary, it seems that most people would agree that if Joe had fought Dawson and beat him, his legacy would be pristine. No one in the world would be able to doubt his legacy or demand he fight on after such a feat. All it took was one more fight to shut up everyone who doubts him.
    Because he didn't, Calzaghe's legacy...is a question mark. How anti-climactic.
I don't think it's so much that, it's more that (a) from Calzaghe's point of view, he couldn't get excited - at this stage in his career, when he was looking for at most one more career defining fight - about fighting someone who is as yet unproven and who outside hardcore boxing fans like you and me, almost no one has heard of, and (b) the haters wouldn't be satisfied if he beat Dawson, they'd just say he was a nobody anyway. I can see where you're coming from but I can see it from Calzaghe's point of view as well. And there's another aspect. From the point of view of Dawson's career and from the point of view of the future health of the Light Heavyweight division, it would be a big setback if Calzaghe had beaten Dawson convincingly and then immediately retired. It would mean the division would have a much less credible champion, and it might hit Dawson's confidence.

accusing all calzaghe fans of being nationalistic

their defensive but there is a good reason for that and the fact is british fighters never get their due

eubank never got it until people realised they hated calzaghe and all of a sudden eubank became way over the hill(and he was but that's not the point)

Benn never got it didn't matter how many top americans he beat and it didn't matter if he went over there to prove his credibility he still didn't get it

herol graham didn't get it and hagler ducked him although no one cares to mention this because he is british but if it had been the other way around then they would have been all over him saying he was a coward

alot of the american media and fans should start appreciating the boxers not their ****ing nationality
I never claimed all his fans are nationalistic but everyone going around claiming American fans hate him because of his nationality would be just as foolish. Hatton does not get nearly as disrespected and Lewis will always be regarded highly.

I haven't seen any hate towards Benn on this board or throughout his career from the American media, so I don't know what your on about.

Hagler ducked Graham? Can you elaborate on this? He was never one to shy from a challenge but maybe you have some facts that you would like to share....

People always say the SUPIDIST things,HOPKINS beat WINKY WRIGHT ,lost to CALZAGHE,then 8 MONTHS LATER(OLDER)beats a lb for lber in PAVLIK.HOPKINS is on most peoples top 5 LB for lb RIGHT NOW,and would AT THIS TIME embarrass most if NOT ALL around his weight.KESSLER was favored to not only beat CALZAGHE but ko him (lets not forget how many of YOU picked KESSLER to KO CALZAGHE.Well it wasn't JOE that was hurt during that fight was it, it was KESSLER with a bodyshot in the 9th.The last argument people constantly say is JOE fought old men ,well take HOPKINS out of that right now because THAT OLD MAN SCHOOLS ALMOST ANYONE and add the fact that CALZAGHE is 37 his dame self and turned pro at 20.Do yourselves a favor and go on YOUTUBE.COM and watch some early CALZAGHE, he had MUCH more POWER and was FASTER!!!ISAY, WELL DONE JOE ,retiring on your time and not being forced out of the game as you notice your own skills diminish.Very RARELY done when you consider how much money he could STILL MAKE.People should be congradulating him instead of all this BASHING.Its just JEALUSY ANYWAY.

^^^Dawson agreed to fight Diaconu, it was scheduled for September 2007, but then Diaconu pulled out injured.

No you seriously underestimate the guy, you don't give him props at all. Calzaghe retired as the P4P #3, whereas Dawson isn't in even in the top 10, which means most boxing experts strongly disagree with you. You're entitled to your opinion, but your attitude that you're right and all the experts are dummies is the height of arrogance.

No, unlike you, Dawson has real class. Read the article to see what he has to say about Calzaghe: "He has been a man for all seasons and will be an inspiration to me."

Well Johnson also knocked out a younger Roy Jones, while Joe just slapped him around (no pun intended).
