I've seen the growing interest displayed here because of the names of these great champions (Leonard, Hagler, Hearns, & Duran) being link to Joe...not of Michael Spinks, Foster, etc...
You're still missing the point. Those great champions were great when they were at lower weights, they were well past their peak when they moved up. Have you even watched their fights???

The light heavyweights like Bob Foster and Michael Spinks are a much more sensible comparison if you are trying to guage Calzaghe's greatness - whether you like it or not - because they fought at their peak at roughly the same weight as Calzaghe did. How hard is that to understand?

    • I doubt Calzaghe would beat Hagler, Hagler ate up fellow southpaws, and I think Calzaghe would run into Hagler's right jab too often.
Although Ive never seen Calzaghe against another southpaw, actually...

I dont think he would beat Hearns either, Hearns was able to outfight a very good Virgil Hill at the higher weights, and Hill would be a test for Calzaghe as it is. plus that lazer beam right hand of Hearns would give Calzaghe a lot of trouble.

Calzaghe would probebly have success against Leonard, and Benn was just the right type of opponent for Calzaghe, although Im sure he would have his moments and it would go the distance.

btw, wow, look at the number of posts in this thread.

You might be right, but Calzaghe had an underrated tactical brain, IMO, and had the ability to adjust his tactics mid-fight. Even if Hagler outboxed him to start with, as you predict, Calzaghe might well have been able to adjust and to negate Hagler's jab in the later rounds.

Re. Hearns, I think Calzaghe would have been too busy for him, but I agree that Hearns was the only one in the list who fought really well (when compared with their peak performances) at or around light-heavyweight.

        • Benn knows what he is talking about.

          • I like Benn's honesty. Boxers dont admit when someone might beat them. He is honest enough-as was Eubank on Roy Jones.

He forgot Tyson, Foreman, Frazier, Ali and Holyfield.

              • He wouldn't beat Hagler, possibly Hearns.

The others? well yeah, he probably would.

Leonard and Duran were far too small for Joe, and Nige if he couldn't knock Joe out, would get outmanoevered.

                • Hagler would have eaten Joe up on the inside. I think Hagler was overrated, but one thing that was not overrated about him was his inside game......... the guy could rumble on the inside when he decided to throw down, if his Boxing wasn't going to plan.

Hearns and Leonard is a silly arguement, because niether of them are MW and Leonard was past his best when he fought there. Leonard and Hearns are better all round fighters without a question! of a doubt though.

Wonder how haggler would have stayed up against those Slapping hooks from Calzaghe, they are monster punches.

Joe wouldn't of budged Hagler even, when he could apparently punch hard. Hagler not only took Hearns best shots, he also fought guys like Sibson,Obell,Roldan that were much bigger than him and they could all crack, and none of them could hurt Hagler.

Hell Sibbo looked like godamn! CW let alone a MW.
