Boxing PPV Numbers: As A Fan, Who Really Cares?

Unless you're a promoter, should you care if a PPV fight made so many figures? The reason I bring this up is because I've noticed some people here who hate on certain fighters and hilariously go out of their way to bring out the PPV numbers from their previous fights thus trying to prove a fight was NOT successful.

But as a fan, what is more successful in your eyes...getting your money's worth by watching a great fight or looking at the PPV buy rates a month later as if you're the promoter's accountant?

Of course it matters. I'm the first to point out I dislike money ruling things too much at times, especially in sport. Football and Boxing are some of the worst in many ways. But we need money coming into this sport to keep it healthy, well televised, the athletes paid well, working hard and incentivised, getting what they deserve, networks being able to take on more fights as it's financially sound.

If earnings go down so do the number and quality of fights very often, as networks, promoters and all sorts have to be even more tight, businss savy and conservative.

When guys are fairly big draws it draws in terms of PPV it's a good sign also people are being brought into the sport, networks jump at the fight where they otherwise mightn't. Without those none of those things are so true, this a bleaker situation for boxing.

I do think the US pays to much for their PPV's though in comparison with the rest of the world, and this is partially why less people are watching over all. But it's a balance to be worked on over time.

True. I think it was the Floydboyz who started this whole ppv # craze. They used it to justify Floyd not having to fight Marg and Cotto. Funny how this didnt come up when Floyd fought Baldomir.

                  How does that affect fans??

The one way it would affect fans negatively is putting together **** cards and charging the public $60

But PPVs like Cotto vs Margarito, which did 450K on PPV, wasn't necessarily the biggest selling PPV, but in no way for Boxing fans was it NOT successful.

So the point is, financially, Unless your name is Lou Dibella, Oscar De La Holya, Bob Arum, etc.. how does caring about PPV numbers or comparing what one fight made more than the other change the outcome of an already great fight?

It matters because it matters to the sport. It also, for better or worse, dictates big fights. Whether you like to believe it or not, it does.

If someones fights do bad on PPV than the big stars aren't really going to be enticed to fight them. Therefore, it matters. Plus, big numbers are good for the sport, so as a fan of the sport you gotta care.
