i think clinching is a learned skill that every fighter needs to have. you have to know when to clinch and how to clinch.

with that said, it wasn't clinching, or lack of clinching that was cotto's downfall against margarito. margarito was the better and smarter fighter that night. he had a better game plan, and better execution of that plan.
