Maybe he was joking when he said this?

"I could probably give Jones a tough fight, probably the best fight he's ever had," said Calzaghe. "But I know my capabilities and unless I got paid the crown ***els I wouldn't want to risk it."
    Damn LOL. That doesn't scream:

''Hey, am Joe Calzaghe and i want to fight the best and take all risks''

    What that really screams is:

''Hey, am Joe Calzaghe and i won't fight anyone who puts my '0' at risk because it's my dream to retire undefeated like Rocky Marciano!''

I think Kris is on point with his opinion... BS you should chill a little... he came out and said Ricky took more risks over his favorite fighter... that deserves something.

          You clearly choose what you dismiss, but unfortunately he spoke about being willing to face Jones more emphatically many more times then that one comment, some examples;

"I have no fear whatsoever of Jones... I would jump on the next plane to the States and defend my title against him in his own backyard if the opportunity arose,"

"I am the best super-middleweight in the world and I am out to prove that I am the best fighter on the planet. If Jones disagrees, lets get it on,"

"Jones is supposed to be the best fighter in the world at the moment. A showdown between us has got to happen to prove who is the best."

Hatton, that's only because the biggest risk (and only risk) Calzaghe took was against someone called Lacy.

The same Lacy the appeared all of a sudden, los, then disappeared.

Last i heard of him was he was schooled silly by Taylor

Calzaghe loves to contradict himself so maybe he did say those things but which one should anyone believe?

EDIT: my quote was his latest thoughts on the subject in 2003
while yours was after the Harding victory.

He has done but then so have a lot of Boxers, ODL says he won't face Hatton as he's a natural lighter guy and should stay at LWW, so will face Margarito Cotto winner. Then he won't face Cotto because like his GF, he is Puerto Rican. Won't face Margarito because like him he's Mexican.

Then he faces someone even lighter than Hatton in Pacman. And he wants the Hatton fight now.

These are majorly worse contradictions of current times in closer times periods, yet hardly get mentioned. And that's just one boxer. A little odd.

Like I say, yes Calzaghe made that one comment on probably not fancying his chances against Jones, but didn't say definitely or wouldn't face him really. Plus it was one comment once, a lot of boxers are confident most of the time but have blips in confidence, heck Haye was un confident and contradictory talking about the HW's in the pre Barrett presser, saying I'd retire if Monte beat him even as he'd look silly and would realise he's not the real deal. Hardly in line with his usual comments were used to.

Like I say and all I'm saying is, Calzaghe did factually, speak out more emphatically and more often about being more than willing to face Jones on a few occasions, imo out weighing that one off rather light comment. Still a daft thing to say though admitted.
