The respect a fighter sees on these forums the day after a fight is always skewed and temporary. However, if he wants to be respected by history it helps to continue taking competitive fights. If the guy says his hands won't let him or he's getting headaches? Then I suppose he needs to retire. But that's not the impression i get.

Everyone has their "match". If Joe fights on, he is eventually going to meet it. I'm not opposed to him fighting on... I just would rather he go out on top. I obviously wan't alive to live through it, but when my Dad was a boy he remembers the calls for Marciano to continue. People said an old Ezzard Charles and a battle worn Archie Moor were not fitting ends to his career. After time passes and the naysayer themselves forget via alzheimer's... that undefeated record will still stand out. One thing is for sure... and this is something we all should admire... If Joe continues, its because he has grown restless... not because he wants to please the fans or the critics.

if joe doesn't have the hunger for it then i dont think he will go on and fight anymore, and rightfully so its when fighters dont have the hunger for it that they go on and hurt themselves and their careers.

but i think once dawson is finished with tarver, calzaghe would have had a very long lay off and i can see him itching to get back in the ring.

If he ain't gonna rematch Hop or fight Glen, he should retire. And he ain't gonna fight either.

Calzaghe isn't my favourite fighter but I am a fan, I don't care to watch someone i Enjoy watching and respect as a Boxer turn into RJJ circa 2008 or Evander doddering Holyfield.

there is always a "Right" time to retire and joe has said for 2 year that the end of 2008 was it, I respect that and think it's proabably the right time.

Who else is there to fight? Dawson? give me a break the guys only good names are two guys older and worse on a resume than Jones. 12 months ago nobody knew Chad Dawson, back then it was Pavlik in 12 months it will be taylor or froch, 2 years ago it was Kessler, 3 years ago it was Lacy.

Dawson is no more elite now than Lacy was 3 years ago, he may turn out to be but equally he could be just as much a hype job, tell me when he fights a good young LHW and i'll tune in and decide then.

In 12 months time and Dawson is sat at 28 - 1 and A taylor fight at catchweight in the offing it'll be Calzaghe is ducking Tavoris Cloud or Erdei or < insert latest hype job here >

None of those fight mean anything, he beat the best at SMW, beat the best at LHW it's his time to retire, move on. let Dawson fight the likes of Erdei or Cloud people his egenration instead of 40 year olds.

Calzaghe at least has an excuse he's 37 himself, he's fighting the people who for one reason or another he hasn't fought out of HIS generation.

The only possible fight out there maybe (In MY opinion) is Johnson and we all know exactly what would be said if that fight was made.

It looks like Calzaghe wants to retire but I don't really hear much demand from
his fans or detractors to return to the ring. This kinda wierd since there is
definitely a demand for Floyd to keep fighting. So do people want him to comeback?
or stay retired and why? IMO fans should want to see him continue since he
is still in excellent condition and hasn't taken any major punishment.
                  Poll to Follow.
only if calz fights hopkins or dawson.

This doesn't respond to the fact that fans should want to see fighers fight and should not concern themselves with criticism. History will sort that out later. Calzaghe will not be doddering around like Holyfield. As I said earlier his style and the fights he's been in do not put him in a position to be anything like that. If you want to see your guy retire, that's fine but I personally like watching boxers box.
