there is always a "Right" time to retire and joe has said for 2 year that the end of 2008 was it, I respect that and think it's proabably the right time.

Who else is there to fight? Dawson? give me a break the guys only good names are two guys older and worse on a resume than Jones. 12 months ago nobody knew Chad Dawson, back then it was Pavlik in 12 months it will be taylor or froch, 2 years ago it was Kessler, 3 years ago it was Lacy.

Dawson is no more elite now than Lacy was 3 years ago, he may turn out to be but equally he could be just as much a hype job, tell me when he fights a good young LHW and i'll tune in and decide then.

In 12 months time and Dawson is sat at 28 - 1 and A taylor fight at catchweight in the offing it'll be Calzaghe is ducking Tavoris Cloud or Erdei or < insert latest hype job here >

None of those fight mean anything, he beat the best at SMW, beat the best at LHW it's his time to retire, move on. let Dawson fight the likes of Erdei or Cloud people his egenration instead of 40 year olds.

Calzaghe at least has an excuse he's 37 himself, he's fighting the people who for one reason or another he hasn't fought out of HIS generation.

The only possible fight out there maybe (In MY opinion) is Johnson and we all know exactly what would be said if that fight was made.
I suppose a retirement at this moment could be considered going out on top. I still maintain he has plenty more to offer though, this is nothing like the typical past his prime pug sticking around too long.

If you want to see your guy retire, that's fine but I personally like watching boxers box.
Yeah, but thats purely a matter of perspective... "The Role of a Fan" by Drew Woodside. I'm a fan of Joe Frazier and Ali... but I don't want to see them fight again. Obviously thats an extreme, but the principle is the same. They're finished with their careers. Calzaghe has walked into the gym, putting an end to time with friends and family, to go through all the strain of cutting weight, lifting weights, running, sit-ups, pull-ups, sparring, heavy bag work, sauna roasts, press conferences, team meetings, plane flights... all BEFORE the fight... then after, doctors appointments, broken noses, being sore, hands healing, etc....

The guy has done this 46 times over 15 years! Aside from the hustle of the amateurs.

I appreciate that but the idea of the thread was what do the fans want. Obviously if Calzaghe wants to retire to business and family that's his prerogative but I'm just curious what the fans want.
