  • Fighters putting on many pounds on fight night...

I have been going on some threads which have people commenting them showing pictures of HBO's "Tale of the Tape" on fight night, and it seems that many fighters go to the weigh in at there correct weight, and then put on an extra 10 pounds before the fight so for example; as a welterweight on fight night weighing 157 instead of 147.

I was just wandering if anyone thinks that there should be a limit on how much weight you can put on when it's fight night... any thoughts?

They should just make them weigh in 1 hour before the fight and the other guy gets the purse if they don't make the weight.

that way if you try a "Cheat" the system, you'll just lose.

Not that I think they Cheat the system now but i didn't know what other word to use.

      ...

In my opinion I think they should be allowed to put a little bit of weight on but with a limit, something like 5 pounds... that's what I think anyway I don't know about anyone else.

they should be allowed some weight up to 8 or 10 lbs at the most. otherwise we would be seeing a ton of ****ty weight drained fights.

Arturo Gatti was 19lbs over the divisional limit for his fight with Joey Gamache and damn near killed the guy, ending his career.

One of the sanctioning bodies, the IBF I think, has a rule that a fighter can be a maximum of 10lb over the divisional limit on fight night.

Even so, it makes a mockery of the weight system when the ring weight of a "welterweight" champ is closer to the middleweight limit.

Maybe your weight drained comment is right but, I think it is a little bit ****** that in a welterweight bout, both or just on of the fighters are going into the ring as a middleweight (in pounds)... it kind of loses the meaning of weight classes because your a middleweight fighting in a welterweight bout... I am not saying fighters shouldn't be able to put on a few pounds after the weight in and before fight night but I think it should be strictly limited... that's why I say 5-6 pounds more is okay, anything more isn't... like I read in a previous post about the most someone has put on over night is 23 pounds... that's unfair on other fighters and it is basically cheating the weight system... I think it should be 5-6 pounds max on fight night, it will make bouts more fair.

The problem with your comment is that Gamache fought as high as Junior Middleweight and realy no smaller than Gatti. Could Gamache's beating just have been a major ass whipping instead of a soapbox for a bunch of people with nothing but excuse's.
