How to get fighters to fight in their Natural Weight classes...would this work?

Combine the first two posts; restrict weight classes more, and have less of them. A lot of the fighters use this loop hole as an advantage and often exploit it to the max (Clottey). Not to discredit any of their performances, but it does give an upper hand when you're outweighing your opponent more than ten pounds.
Reverting back to weightclasses with out subdivisions and tightening the grip on weight and weight control should be changed.Comment

Wouldn't we just be going back to the original rule?
I always thought the original rule was same day weigh-ins
And you are missing the point. It isn't just about Mayweather. I started thinking of it when I saw the Gatti-Gamache fight and it was brought up in the forum...not sure this one though. People frowned upon the fight.
Floyd's retired right now and even if he does come back, it may be for 2 fights and then he is retiring again. It's for everybody.
Floyd is only used as an example because he was one of the few fighters that were closer to the actual division rule. I wasn't sure about any other fighter. But, there are fighters that will gain 5 pounds and still be out-weighed by 10 or more.
It is also about when fighters move up in weight class. If Pac were to go to WW now, he will be 147+ fighting others that are 160+Last edited by Benny Leonard; 04-24-2009, 04:33 AM.Comment

Depends on how long you wanna go back. There was 3 weigh-ins when Joe Gans fought Battling Nelson the first time. Last weigh-in was in fightgear in the ring.Wouldn't we just be going back to the original rule?

That was in 1906.

Ring deaths because fighters are trying to abuse the weight-division?
Take the JrWW division. Most fighters come in around 147-149 probably. Their new weight division is now WW. No need to dehydrate to much and then rehydrate to make weight.
All the others that still want stick with the draining of weight...let them. Ring Deaths? We have them already. When I watch a fight, I understand the risk that these fighters take and I might see a ring death. I want two healthy fighters in there and if one chooses not to be, have a Doctor check the fighters out before the fight; give them a physical the day of the fight. If he fails, he is suspended.
What do we say to the fighter that fights in the division that is out-weighed by 10-20 pounds?
If that is the case, why have divisions?Last edited by Benny Leonard; 04-24-2009, 04:41 AM.Comment

Not really.
And again, everybody fights under the same rules and the same advantages/Disadvantages.
You just made this thread, because of Floyd nothing more.
back then they had their system, now is a dfferent one. Still people fight under the same rules.Comment

Was that the norm?
Government can set the rule. Have one set standard rule or maybe it will fall to the State...as well as the fighters agreeing on it.
I don't know...everything I thought of at the moment is on my thread although I think I left out what I just added with having a Doctor give a physical the day of the fight to check the fighter's health.
Either way...it should be at least discussed and have Doctors opinion on the matter with promoters left out of the discussion. Fighters can be heard.
I would be in favor of the idea carefully being written out and passed along to the fighters and have them vote on it to see what they say. If they say it is cool the way it is now...I'm OK with it. But the idea should be at least brought up since fighters usually just follow suit.Comment
