Maybe not yet because only one generation of people have really got into the sport. But Silva vs GSP would sell 700,000 easily and that would be impressive for a sport that has been mainstream for less than 10 years.
UFC 92 is a good card but 2 days after Christmas in these times, won't mean big numbers. Silva won't ever get a million buys because he doesn't speak english, even though he's great. UFC is doing a 24/7-like build up for the BJ Penn-GSP fight. I think that'll do around 400,000-600,000. So it seems Lesnar is the only big name left who is marketable that's not over the hill (Randy Couture, Chuck Lidell won't ever get a million). I don't think Lesnar will ever get a million unless Dana White brings Fedor into the UFC.
I thought ufc 91 pulled around 825k PPV buys..... MMA only has a few marketable fighters (GSP, BJ Penn, Anderson, Wanderlei, Rampage, Lesnar, Chuck etcetc).... and MMA is really unsteady .
anyways, boxing > MMA (This is coming from a FORMER avid mma fan)... mma has lost it's appeal to me.
MMA always seemed more like a fad like pro wrestling unlike an established sport like boxing. I'm not sure how well it's doing these days though because I hear conflicting reports from everywhere. Some say boxing is dead this year and MMA is in the lead, and then again I also hear that MMA fanhood is on the decline due to old fighters, drop in competition and failed leagues like Elite... whatever it was. I even hearfrom former fans like mishka80 who are downing the sport now. So I don't know what to make of it all.
Only thing I have to say is that it doesn't really appeal to me. Bunch of half naked men rolling around on the ground in action that resembles a schoolyard brawl just doesn't appease me.
